Sr. Director, Software Engineering

Responsibilities:

Cultivate an empowered team of high performing engineers, engineering leaders (managers, Sr Mgrs, Directors) who are deeply passionate about building quality software products

Foster ongoing engineering transformation and continuous improvement throughout the organization, advocating for common engineering patterns, efficiency, quality, resiliency, security and performance

Demonstrate courage in pushing cultural and technical boundaries

Create an environment of trust in which teams can “fail fast”, developing the team in the process

Encourage innovation and diversity of thought to solve complex business problems

Remove impediments to achieving quality standards, project deadlines and business objectives

Willing and able to jump in and solve technical problems when needed

Calm and thoughtful leadership presence leading urgent events

Develop strong matrix relationships with product and planning, Architecture, Business, Ops, Enterprise Architecture and other business partner entities.

Influence and communicate at all levels of the organization

Ensure holistic ownership and accountability for UM platforms and organization

Deep understanding of the engineering practice maturity, strengths and opportunities in each underlying organization, striving for continuous improvement

End-to-end knowledge of UM ecosystem, business transactions, technology stack, dependencies, and engineering practices

Influence business partners at all levels of the organization to align future state business and technical road maps

Construct business cases to influence support for large, transformative technology investments

Establish organizational staffing strategy including budget planning, performance management and development of the team

Deliver through the team, using delegation effectively to deliver

Nurture future leaders

Apply knowledge of business and the marketplace to advance the organization’s goals

Have the technical expertise and presence to lead the troubleshooting conversation confidently, yet is able to discern when it is appropriate to pivot between tactical and strategic tasks

Keep a pulse on industry trends and help the organization envision what is possible

Work as an Executive for Strategic Vendors

Set UM vision / goals and marshal and empower leaders and organization towards successful execution of the goals.

Ensure platforms are stable, resilient and secure.

Qualifications:

General

Bachelor’s degree required in Computer Science or a related field; Master’s degree preferred in Computer Science, Business, or a related field.

Demonstrated leadership, vision and strategy; strong executive presence – at least 5 years of experience in senior technology leadership roles.

Strong communication and relationship-building skills with all levels of employees, management, stakeholders, and customers.

Demonstrated history of success leading software engineering teams in medium to large-scale organizations.

Ability to align software development strategies with overall business goals and objectives.

Business & Industry Acumen

Deep understanding of the healthcare industry, its regulatory landscape, and the unique challenges and opportunities it presents.

Familiarity with emerging technologies like AI, ML, IoT, and their potential impact on healthcare delivery.

Ability to manage relationships with external software vendors and managed service providers.

Experience in a risk-bearing delivery organization with broad domain expertise around value-based care.

Knowledge of financial metrics and their application to software development projects.

Leadership and Management Skills

Ability to drive technology change in partnership with the business; exceptional skills in transformation and alignment with key stakeholders.

Positive, collaborative, and proactive management style with proven ability to build teams of top talent and foster a culture of high performance,

Experience integrating teams across multiple business lines and managing a geographically dispersed workforce including offshore operations and 3rd party vendors

Proven team-builder who can recruit, develop, and mentor a highly collaborative group capable of supporting future growth.

Strong project management skills with a proven track record of delivering multiple complex projects involving numerous customers, interests, and objectives.

Experience in identifying and mitigating risks associated with software development initiatives.

Technical Expertise and Experience

Experience in complex, rapidly growing healthcare environments, building technology solutions to enhance patient, clinician, and employee experience

Strong background in software development and architecture, as well as experience with cloud technologies and scalable systems

Track record of designing and implementing scalable, high-performance software systems.

Strong grasp of emerging technologies and their potential applications within the healthcare industry.

Proficiency with cloud-native development and deployment on platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.

Experience with Agile frameworks and their application in software development.
