Overview
The mentor is responsible for working with student – athletes who are experiencing academic difficulties and/or have newly matriculated to Utah State University. The mentors role is to serve as a supportive resource for student-athletes and provide them with tools and resources to help them mitigate their identified challenges. Mentoring helps student-athletes learn fundamental academic success skills that can help them become more effective at self-regulating their own learning.

Responsibilities
Depending on the skill development needs of each student-athlete, mentoring sessions may include:

Identification of learning styles
Practicing self and time management skills
Academic planning of assignments, quizzes, exams, etc.
Using a syllabus planner
Reading comprehension/text annotating
Test taking strategies/overcoming test anxiety
Communication skills with faculty
Goal Setting
Information Literacy
Utilizing Academic Success Resources
Mentoring sessions do not include:

Subject tutoring
Personal Counseling
Course Advisement/ Eligibility

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

External university candidates must have a bachelors degree
Must be ethical, responsible, and professional
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:

Junior, senior, or graduate student (students in social work, clinical psychology, counseling, education, family, consumer, human development preferred)
External university candidates in social work, clinical psychology, counseling, education, family, consumer, human development, or related fields preferred
Experience working one-on-one with individuals (preference for those who work or have experience working with students/persons from underrepresented communities)
Experience as a tutor, teacher, educator, or interest in pursuing a career in human services preferred but not required
