Empower the next generation of scholars by fostering academic achievement, personal support, and career success as an Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Counselor. The Office of Opportunity Programs at the State University of New York (SUNY) University at Oneonta is excited to announce two openings for the impactful role of EOP Counselor. Expectations will be to advance the Universitys mission by promoting academic excellence while providing comprehensive academic, career, financial, and personal counseling to a dedicated caseload of EOP students.

EOP Counselors are professional educators who share responsibility for creating an environment where students are appreciated, supported, and encouraged to excel. EOP is an academic and personal support program that serves approximately 280 socioeconomically disadvantaged students. EOP at SUNY Oneonta was founded in 1968 and is one of 55 EOPs in the SUNY System. Duties include but not limited to:

Under the supervision of an EOP Director, an EOP Counselor is responsible for all assignments and/or projects related to the counseling of Educational Opportunity Program students as assigned by the Director.

Maintain a counseling relationship with program students by providing individual and group counseling sessions relating to academic, financial, career and personal counseling matters.

Submit periodic and semester counseling reports as required by the Director.

Course instruction if needed.

Maintain office hours.

Collaborate and participate in the Pre-freshman Summer Program and provide services to incoming students.

Provide support to the Director in the EOP admissions process.

Maintain logs of daily counseling activities.

Pay special attention to retention problems.

Assist with filing of financial aid applications.

Serve on EOP standing committees and participate in other campus/community activities that involve EOP students.

Job Requirements:

Required qualifications:

Bachelors degree

A valid license to drive in NYS

Competence in Microsoft Office applications

Effective written communication and presentation skills

Experience providing personal, academic, financial or career counseling to students

Preferred:

Experience working in higher education

Demonstrated ability to plan and execute successful student programming

Experience working in programs that serve socio-economically disadvantaged students

Experience utilizing higher education computer applications such as Banner, SLATE and Degree Works

Bilingual, Spanish preferred

Experience working with and serving diverse populations
