Teacher Aides may be required to provide personal care to students including toileting. Lifting may be involved. Aides may be working in life skills classrooms, job coaching or with special needs students.

This aide is required to provide support to a special education student(s) as assigned at the non-public school for the duration of the students school day.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the administration and or the students case manager, the aide will provide supports for the students educational and daily functional needs as it pertains to the student accessing his or her educational environment.

This can include but is not limited to:

support for organization of materials and supplies;

support with schedule and navigation throughout the building;

behavior strategies to support the student demonstrating appropriate actions in school;

support with language and communication skills;

support with gross or fine motor skills;

support for academic performance in the classroom;

support for gaining skills toward being as independent as possible;

any other duties or responsibilities assigned to support the student(s) accessing their educational setting.

Expectations:

Provide support to a special education student(s) as assigned at the non-public school for the duration of the students school day.

Adhere to the District Code of Conduct, school policies and procedures.

Follow directives given by the Principal or Assistant Principal or other District Administrator.

Work directly through the students teachers, particularly the students case manager.

Keep all student(s) information confidential and only share information with those who have direct educational responsibilities and involvement with the student(s).

Maintain frequent communications with the teachers and providers supporting the student(s as well as the District Coordinator of Special Education overseeing the non-public schools, to ensure open and up-to-date information regarding addressing the needs of the student or concerns regarding duties and responsibilities.

Direct any parent inquiries to the teacher overseeing the student(s) as case manager or to faculty or administrator as appropriate.

Receive information regarding the student(s) needs from the case manager.

Non-competetive Civil Service job description:

Distinguishing Features of the Class: The work involves relieving school teaches in a large suburban school district of that part of their duties which, while related to the teaching process, can be performed by noncertified personnel. The work requires the incumbent to have some knowledge of the specific area of instruction performed by the teacher, to which the teacher aide is assigned. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment and to have considerable ability in getting along with children. Does related work as required.

Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; OR

Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved; OR

An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

NOTE: This position is not designed to replace clerical positions such as Typist, Stenographer or Clerk. Also, it is not designed to assist a Teacher in the teaching process; this is reserved for Teaching Assistants. See Section 80.33 Rules of the Board of Regents and Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Special Requirements:Ability to establish good relationships with students, teachers and others; ability to gain and hold the confidence of and to maintain a patient and understanding attitude towards school children; ability to maintain order in classrooms and to enforce school regulations with firmness; familiarity with classroom routine; good background or knowledge in specific field where specialized duties are involved; resourcefulness in conducting activities indirectly related to teaching process; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; dependability; neat personal appearance; tact; courtesy; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Reports to:All work is performed under the direct supervision of the teacher or school principal.

Typical Work Activities:

Is familiar with and contributes to the successful implementation of the Districts Mission and Belief statements;

Oversees students in completing assigned projects;

Assists the teacher in recording grades and marks;

Proctors and otherwise helps to conduct examinations;

Assists the teacher in correcting test papers, themes and essays;

Manages records, materials and equipment;

Supervises students doing remedial work directed by teacher;

Assists in preparing bulletin boards, teacher aids and organization of necessary materials;

Assists teachers in the supervision of students and performs other support services which are determined and supervised by teachers.

Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as directed by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
