Headcount – 7 direct; 8 total

Member of R&D Leadership Team

Responsible for management Analytical Laboratory, including:

Provides professional input on selection and purchasing of instrumentation and specialized analyses

Responsible for maintenance and repair of analytical equipment

With team, manage equipment supplier relationships

Supports Quality Management System

Provides input on work flow process and documentation for the Analytical Laboratory

Works within established safety guidelines and seeks continual process and safety improvements

Occasional travel required (< 10%)

Activities

Analytical Service Management

Perform complex analyses on multiple projects. These projects include support of R&D and EHS projects, support of sales and marketing projects, technical support for operations and technical support for customers where specialized testing is involved. Projects support all business units in multiple geographies.

Development and documentation of analytical testing procedures

Development and execution of instrumentation and capability plans

Development, execution, and documentation of calibration and verification procedures

Acts as a liaison with outside professionals for contract testing.

Organize and lead regular meetings team

Define individual objectives of team to align to company vision/goals.

Align with NA R&D leadership team members on resource allocation to support their business needs.

Lead and develop a balanced team to ensure they are qualified to meet company vision/goals and keep them motivated. Build a development plan for each member of the team to insure each person has a clear career path.

Define, implement, and monitor individual objectives.

Drive the team to further the culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Maintain relationships with internal and external customers.

Promote safe practices for the Analytical Laboratories.

Context and environment

Analytical Services manager involves directing efforts of Analytical team to complete, in timely fashion, analytical service requests supporting all four GBUs. Support primarily for NA & LATAM sites and R&D & TS teams. Role also requires ensuring systems and practices are up to date, equipment is kept calibrated and operating, and team is trained on newest techniques.

Requires expertise in multiple chemistries/product families and multiple business units with independent aggressive business plans. Involves balancing resources between longer-term research projects and unpredictable / variable immediate technical crises.

Requires ability to communicate with multiple functions/geographies and levels of education/technical expertise.

Accountabilities

Analytical Services Management

Support scale up of new technologies including development specifications as well as QC and other methods to ensure product / raw material quality and consistency

Support sales, marketing, and Tech Service in developing technical relationships with key customers

To support specialized testing capabilities for Bostik Americas, with coordination from other global Bostik and Arkema analytical laboratories. This includes providing input on what techniques, equipment and resources are needed, acting as a resource in interaction with outside entities, growing a team of professionals, supporting a process for analytical testing in a safe manner and assuring that data is repeatable and technically sound.

Staff development—ability to build a strong and competent staff of professionals to meet Bostik’s and BU’s business objectives.

Hire, coach and train new employees.

Qualifications / experience required

Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, polymer, or material science; OR B.S. in chemistry, chemical engineer, biology, or related discipline with extensive experience in performing a wide variety of analytical tests and polymer characterization.

Experience in multiple characterization techniques including rheological, thermal, chromatographic, and spectral techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Experience with adhesive and sealant chemistries, end uses, and formulations preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of experience in an industrial laboratory or equivalent proven ability to manage multiple complex projects in a service laboratory.

Prefer experience managing technical employees

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to describe results of studies within Bostik global R&D community as well as to business teams and external customers.

Proven ability to lead/mentor a team of analysts.
