Community Lead Educator — Temporary/Part-Time

– $14.54/hr.
– This part-time, temporary position allows for a maximum of 1,000 hours per calendar year. It does not include any benefits.

Duties:

– Plays a critical role in the Berrien County Health Departments efforts to reduce lead exposure in the Benton Harbor community.
– Conducts in-home assessments, providing education and support to residents as they transition to the statewide “Get Ahead of Lead Program.”
– Collaborates closely with community partners and participates in public outreach efforts to ensure that residents are informed and supported in maintaining safe and lead-free homes.
– Participates with hosting monthly Point of Distribution events (PODS) to assist with program enrollment and the distribution of water filters.
– Demonstrates filter and replacement cartridge installation.
– Attends community events such as the Farmers Market and resource fairs to provide information and assist with setting up and breaking down.
– Distributes and explains the Home Self-Assessment Tool to help residents identify lead hazards in their homes.
– Educates about the negative health effects of lead exposure.
– Communicates information in a brief, clear, and organized manner.
– Produces written information, which may include technical material that is appropriate for the intended audience.

Education and Experience:

– High school diploma or equivalent.
– Experience in community outreach, public health, or a related field, with focus on lead prevention preferred.

Special Requirements:

– Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license with access to a reliable vehicle throughout the course of employment.
– In times of public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.
– The employee must be physically capable of lifting up to 20 pounds, bending, kneeling, and climbing stairs when needed.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

– Knowledge of lead hazards and prevention strategies, or willingness to undergo training.
– Expertise in community organization, facilitation, and other community planning activities.
– Proficiency in using basic technology for data entry and communication.
– Capable of working independently or within a team with minimal supervision.
– Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and relate to a diverse population with sensitivity to individual differences.
– Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
– Able to set priorities, determine resource requirements, identify goals and strategies, and coordinate with other project team members.
– Able to present information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information.
– Strong work ethic, with the ability to adapt behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
– High initiative with a commitment toward completing assignments in a timely manner.
