Medical Coder reviews clinical documentation and diagnostic results as appropriate to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-CM/PCS and CPT codes for billing, internal and external reporting, research, and regulatory compliance. Under the direction of the HIM Manager or HIM Director, accurately code inpatient and/or outpatient (for example, diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency department services, ambulatory surgery (same day surgery), and observation service encounters) conditions and procedures as documented in the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.
Medical Coder qualificaions:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Successful completion of a coding course along with an RHIA, RHIT, or CCS, required. Excellent communication and computer skills.
Two or more years on-the-job experience coding utilizing CPT and ICD-10 desired.
