Salary: $13.00 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY: The Ice Trail Guard is responsible for monitoring the Howard Park Ice Trail and Pond and providing assistance to all users of the facility. This includes providing a high level of customer service at all times and ensuring a safe, welcoming environment that ensures the physical and emotional well-being of all guests.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

– Serves as a representative of the City of South Bend, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions though the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate interactions with the other employees and guests
– Always provides a high level of customer service to guests and program participants. This includes greeting and monitoring all skaters.
– Communicate clearly and professionally with staff and guests.
– Assist with the set-up and take-down of daily operations.
– Keep a neat and clean appearance and follow all uniform requirements.
– Responsible for keeping a clean and organized workspace; this includes picking up trash, checking restrooms, sweeping floors, and shoveling snow.
– Responsible for being on the ice and ensuring the participants are following all safety rules.
– Must be physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively. Contact emergency medical personnel in case of serious injury. Must fill out appropriate paperwork for all incidents.
– Responsible for inspecting the facility/equipment and reporting any unsafe conditions or damaged equipment to the Supervisor on duty or to the Aquatics and Ice Manager. This includes any unsafe or potentially unsafe conditions on the ice.
– Assist maintenance personnel with situations concerning ice conditions or shovel snow
– Attending all in-service training, staff meetings, and pre-season training as scheduled by the Aquatics and Ice Manager.

NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned by the Aquatics and Ice Manager, Supervisor or other Howard Park Staff members.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

– Must be 16 years of age
– Requires interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and interact with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
– Must be able to work various shifts which include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

– Knowledge of skating recommended
– Ability to learn on the job

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Certification required. (Training will be provided to any individual not certified)

EQUIPMENT:Ice skate, skate sharpener, iPad, two-way radio, cones, First Aid kits, cold weather gear.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequentl required to stand, talk, walk, kneel, stoop, bend, lift, skate, use hands to fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, and crawl. The employee must be able to skate for long periods of time. Specific abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may have to lift 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This work is performed outside on and around the ice. The employee will be exposed to various weather conditions. Must be able to stan on ice skates for up to two (2) hours at a time
