The qualified candidate will write articles, fact sheets, and announcements for internal audiences. The candidate will also create content for other deliverables, including newsletters, talking points, employee profiles, digital ads, and event summaries. Ideally, this person will bring passion and new ideas, working with staff across the Laboratory to help tell the story of ORNL’s scientific work and the operational work that makes the science possible. The candidate will support small, short-term needs that cannot be met by existing full-time staff to communicate with lab-wide and targeted internal audiences on topics such as human resources, safety, facilities and operations, information technology, and business services. Responsibilities
Writes feature articles, operations highlights, slide content, website and newsletter content, video scripts, fact-sheet content, web content, and other materials that align with communications strategic plans, while clearly and effectively, operational priorities.
Organizes and analyzes information from highly technical sources and interview subject matter experts to produce written materials in concise and approachable language without loss of technical meaning.
Collaborates with technical editors to ensure adherence to grammar and style guidelines.
Assists in creation of multimedia content for web, social media, and other uses.
Collaborates with staff from Internal Communications to provide needed support and required products.
Supports development of visual and digital media, often working with graphic designers, photographers, and videographers to develop attractive and high-impact visual products.
Qualifications
Ability to understand complex information and communicate it effectively to any audience in a timely, interesting, and compelling manner that conveys the importance and excitement of working at ORNL and/or prompts internal audiences to learn more and make decisions.
Demonstrated verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of effective writing techniques for a variety of media as well as a knowledge of technical language, usage, and style conventions.
Experience interpreting, organizing, and analyzing data from multiple sources.
Demonstrated organizational, recordkeeping, and coordination skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with multiple levels of management or staff.
Demonstrated ability to work independently on multiple time-constrained projects and to successfully complete each.
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, a science or other related field.
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
