JOB SUMMARY

The Thermal Spray Set-Up Technician (Surface Prep) supports the thermal spray technicians by preparing parts for dimensional restoration. Technicians will apply masking to components for in-process operations, conduct a variety of surface preparations using the blasting process on turbine engine components, and use a variety of materials following the established procedures for both masking and grit blasting.

As a member of the thermal spray and surface prep team you will conduct pre- and post-application tasks on turbine engine parts for subsequent dimensional restoration operations while learning more about thermal spray theory and application.

Through our extensive in-house training program, the successful applicant will be instructed via a series of computer based and hands-on training, the necessary skills of the position.

This position performs its duties in a modern climate-controlled facility.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Through our extensive in-house training program, (OJT) the successful applicant will be instructed via a series of computer based and hands-on training, the necessary skills of the position.

1. Mask components as required to protect surfaces from subsequent operations.

2. Apply tape by hand on areas to be masked.

3. Apply hard masking such as caps and shields by following documented work instructions.

4. Trim masking using knives, razor blades, or other sharp tools. Trim masking in accordance with detailed work instructions to precise dimensions.

5. Inspect work for completion and quality.

6. Follow written work instructions accurately including work and shop drawings.

7. Routinely use overhead cranes to position parts.

8. Organize components staged in your department to support a more efficient schedule.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. 6 months – 1 year of experience with various types of masking. (Ex: Paint, Blasting, Autobody, Plating, etc.)

2. Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and follow work instructions and accurately document processes and findings.

3. Some previous exposure to the use of measuring gages, such as micrometers and calipers and the understanding of basic shop math.

4. Experience with the use of overhead cranes.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

1. High school or technical school graduate or equivalent.

2. Basic knowledge of computers and standard software programs.

3. Read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

4. Must be able to use hand tools and have good hand eye coordination.

5. Ability to work independently and perform the job with minimum supervision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

1. This position has pre-employment testing requirements that may require fitness for duty testing and a vision exam.

2. Work in varying positions from time to time. Stand and/or sit for portions of the shift. Move parts (>50 pounds) using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods. Move fewer heavy parts (<50 pounds) with or without hoists, slings, or carts.

3. Follow all safety and environmental rules that apply.

4. Use of safety and personal protective equipment is mandatory under some conditions. The following may or may not be required.

a. Ear plugs.

b. Safety glasses.

c. Uniform.

5. Use powered and hand-held tools frequently.
