What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Health Physics Field Coordinator 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Health Physics Field Coordinator 2 ($101,700 – $168,200)

Radiation Protection Field Support (RP-FS) has a need for a Health Physics Field Coordinator (HPFC) to the STO-FOD at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Reporting to the RP-FS Deputy Group Leader, the HPFC will be responsible for implementation of the Radiation Protection Program (RPP), supporting work execution, and coordinating Radiological Control Technician (RCT) resources. As one of the primary point-of-contacts for radiation protection support for STO-FOD, interact with resident and facility personnel to help ensure the appropriate radiological controls are in place, provide guidance and mentoring to assigned RCTs, respond to radiological incidents and associated reporting requirements, and ensure work documents and permits (e.g. Radiological Work Permits) are readily available for work.

Health Physics Field Coordinator 3 ($112,000 – $186,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, the Health Physics Field Coordinator 3 will have substantial experience reviewing Integrated Work Documents (IWDs) and advanced-level knowledge and experience with radiological controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in radiation protection principles and practices at DOE facilities, responding to radiological incidents/emergencies, maintaining operational health physics requirements, radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control, and other operational health physics activities. Outstanding customer service skills.

• Extensive experience performing radiological work planning, coordinating RP resources, and ensures radiological controls are correctly applied, including high hazard work.

• Extensive experience performing Radiological Document Reviews (RDRs) and procedure development.

• Knowledge of and experience providing technical direction for radiation protection activities to ensure compliance with procedures and 10 CFR 835.

• Extensive experience reviewing and approving radiological survey documentation.

Additional Job Requirements for Health Physics Field Coordinator 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

• Advanced-level problem solving skills, analytical skills and the ability to execute special assignments or

• procedure development consistent with radiation protection regulatory drivers.

• Extensive knowledge and experience responding to radiological incidents and emergencies.

• High-level skill to conceptualize and communicate major elements of radiation control procedures to both technical and non-technical personnel.

• Knowledge of applicable DOE orders and technical standards related to radiation protection.

Training/Certifications: DOE Radiological Control Technician Certification.

Education/Experience at lower level: Bachelors Degree in Health Physics or related Physical Science, and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Bachelors Degree in Health Physics or related Physical Science, and 8 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• RCT Certification

• RWP Authority Authorization, Working knowledge of Los Alamos National Laboratorys radiation protection policies, practices, and procedures.

• RP SME authorization

• Working knowledge of Depleted Uranium and Natural Thorium processing health physics.

• Working knowledge of air monitoring and contamination control, including containment tents and glove boxes

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) Certification

• Knowledge of the Visual Survey Data System (VSDS)

• Microsoft Excel experience

• TSQP qualified

• Experienced in writing radiological procedures

• Active Q clearance

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds, and ability to wear respiratory/protective equipment.

Work Environment: Work at 7300-foot elevation in physically demanding environments near sources of ionizing radiation/contamination; indoors in radiological work areas.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
