A Brief Overview
This is a full-time position and will include on-call responsibilities. The Cardiac Cath Lab Tech supports patient care by assisting physicians with invasive image-guided diagnostic, electrophysiology, lymphatic, interventional, hybrid studies and procedures. The tech serves in the scrub, circulator, and recording role. Procedures include but are not limited to angioplasty, balloon atrial septostomies, stenting, device placements (valves, asd, vsd, etc), thrombolysis, embolization, thoracic duct takedowns, biopsies, ablations, pacemaker and lead placements and laser extractions. They operate sophisticated cardiac medical imaging and diagnostic equipment (single and bi-plane, fluoroscopic angiographic equipment, Ultrasound, Intravascular Ultrasound IVUS, echo, Intracardiac Echo (ICE), Radi-wires, and/or operate 3D mapping systems) and assist with device management in order to obtain optimum study quality and support interventional team needs. The Cardiac Cath Lab Tech acquires/measures/calculates hemodynamic data, performs blood work analysis, prepares procedure rooms, preps patients for procedures, transports patients to and from the lab, cleans procedure rooms, and prepares instruments for re-sterilization. The tech directs and practices safety guidelines for themselves, staff, and patients and adheres to regulatory practices within the Cardiac Cath Lab.
What you will do
1. Uses advanced level knowledge to assist with various special procedures that produce radiographic imaging of optimum diagnostic quality according to department policy and procedure daily.
Follows all current protocols for diagnostic and interventional catheterization, Fluoro, electrophysiologic exams, and interventions
Provide optimal diagnostic imaging and radiation safety for the purpose of diagnostic interpretation
Selects correct technical factors on an individual patient basis (proper techniques) to ensure an image of diagnostic quality.
Administers intravenous injections of contrast media according to policy and procedures of the imaging department.
Independently follows all procedures and ongoing education necessary to perform Point of Care Testing (POCT) such as iSTAT blood gases and ACTs
2. Operates Cardiac Imaging and fluoroscopic equipment according to department policies and procedures independently
Adheres to federal and state radiation safety guidelines and regulations regarding patient and operator protection, collimation, and shielding.
Ensures dosimetry badge is worn 100% of the time outside his/her thyroid shield while he/she is working in the imaging department.
Ensures radiation protection on all patients by using lead shields, lead aprons, and gonadal shields
3. Functions independently with advanced knowledge in scrubbing, recording and circulator roles for majority of Cath Lab case types
Circulator Role
Gathers proced re supplies, catheters, wires, etc.
Set procedure trays
Operates equipment for procedure: Injector, ICE, IVUS, etc
Operates Point of Care Instruments and blood gas analysis
Scrub Role
Set up sterile field
Preps patient
Assist cardiologist with procedure in the sterile field
Assists with hemostasis after lines pulled
Recorder Role
Documents all activities
Maintains log of procedures
Transfers images to archival system
Participates in patient liaison communication and gives report to receiving team
4. Provides and supports interdepartmental teamwork.
Identifies and participates in supporting the needs of other team members
Ensure open communication with nursing staff, etc. regarding case time, and premedication
Document and communicate patient information to staff members, physicians, referring services and nursing care units
Provide Call coverage for off- hours emergency cases and holidays.
Assist in the orientation of new Cath Lab staff members and uses appropriate documentation for this training 100% of the time
5. Maintains workstation area and equipment.
Ensures that the room is checked on initial use for safety
Ensures the equipment is functioning before start of procedure
Ensures that supplies are available and ready for use before shift begins
In conjunction with Inventory Specialist, participate in inventory control and make appropriate arrangements to replenish supplies 100% of the time
Ensures that after the end of shift, work area will be returned to readiness and an acceptable level of cleanliness
Ensures all radiographic equipment is turned off at end of shift and plugged in if applicable
Ensures that all emergency equipment and specialized equipment is checked daily as directed by unit leaders
Education Qualifications
High School Diploma / GED Required
Technical Diploma Radiology, Cardiac Invasive Specialty (CIS) or Cardiovascular Technology (CVT) Program Required
Associates Degree Preferred
Experience Qualifications
At least two (2) years Cardiac Catheterization experience. Required
Pediatric experience Preferred
Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in scrubbing, circulating, and recording roles.
Responsible for maintaining the continuing education required for this position and licensure where applicable.
Complete mandatory education on-line tutorials 100% of the time.
Participates and contributes to team projects and shared governance.
Attend cardiac cath case conference and educational M&M sessions when applicable.
Intermediate knowledge of cardiac interventional diagnostic and interventional procedures
Intermediate knowledge of electrophysiology studies and procedures
Intermediate knowledge of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS)
Intermediate knowledge of all cardiac imaging and diagnostic equipment
Intermediate knowledge of hemodynamic documentation system
Knowledge of HIPAA regulations
Intermediate proficiency with office software (Microsoft Office) including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
