Job Summary
The selected candidate will lead the Scenic Design area in an active graduate and undergraduate Theatre Program at the nationally accredited University of Southern Mississippi. This is a full-time, visiting, Spring semester-only contract in the area of Scenic Design and consists of pedagogy in theatre emphasizing the Design and Technical elements of Scene Design. The selected candidate will participate in a collaborative atmosphere with colleagues in terms of both teaching and creative research. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Teaches all design courses pertaining to scene design including scene design, scene painting, design studio.
THE 406/506– Scene Design, THE 435/636—Advanced Scene Design,
THE 336- Scenic painting, THE 680-Graduate Design Studio
THE 434/534-Design Studio II (Scenographic Rendering/Model Making),
THE 680—Graduate Design Studio, 107-Introduction to Design
May teach other courses depending on experience and needs of program.
Serves as Head of the MFA Scene Design area. Mentors all students in this area, and recruits students for this area.
Advises Graduate and Undergraduate scene design students in their creative projects in Theatre.
Mentors students and graduate assistants in scenic painting of productions.
Designs one production (scenic design) during the academic year as part of their creative research
Attends all faculty/staff, School, and Production meetings.
Collaborates with the Technical Director/Production Manager/Program Coordinator on future designer assignments for productions.
Participates in general recruitment for the Theatre program.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
M.F.A. in Scene Design or related field. Demonstrated understanding of current design and technology in the area of scenic design. The ability to work as a collaborator with faculty across disciplines in the Theatre Program.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge in Computer Aided Drafting—Auto/Cad or Vector Works, Scenic Painting.
Knowledge of Lighting, Sound and Costume design.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching in higher education. Experience mentoring graduate students.
Experience in Projection Design.
Professional experience in scene design and related professional work.
