Magnetic resonance imaging technologists, also referred to as MRI technologists, utilize magnetic resonance imaging scanners to capture specific images ordered by a physician to aid in patient diagnosis. MRI technologists must be able to closely follow a physicians instructions, prepare and operate MRI equipment, position patients correctly, and effectively record the requested diagnostic images.
A caregiver in this position works days/evenings/nights/weekends from 8:00am – 4:30pm or 2:00pm – 10:30pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform MRI scans as prescribed by physicians.
Select proper protocols and equipment/coils.
Interview patients to obtain needed information and provide education to the patient about their scan.
Maintain constant patient contact during scans and respond accordingly to patient reactions such as claustrophobic reactions.
Provide MRI information to patients, families, physicians and other appropriate people.
Ensure the safety of everyone in the MRI area through limiting access and screening.
Assist in developing new techniques and procedures relating to MRI.
Comply with Radiology Information Systems and PACS entry requirements for accurate patient, film, supply and tracking monitors.
Perform duties of technologist in other modalities as qualified if workload requires.
Monitor equipment and helium levels.
Maintain working condition of all equipment and report any malfunctions or needs for adjustments to appropriate personnel.
Proficiently transfer to other modalities as qualified and/or needed, utilizing proper exam protocols and injection procedures.
Assist and support the Radiologic student program, specifically the clinical aspect.
Provide supervision and feedback to students as they perform procedures.
Review images with students on request and provide quarterly evaluations of students to clinical instructions for formal reviews.
Complete mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements.
Maintain applicable certification/licensure.
Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Successful completion of an approved School of Radiology Technology program.
Current license as a Radiologic Technologist by the State of Ohio.
Current certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Certification in MRI by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Must be registered in MRI by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists within eighteen (18) months of acceptance of position.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Ability to travel site-to-site as required.
Current knowledge of MRI techniques and parameters.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
One year of MRI experience.
Two years of experience in diagnostic radiology in order to be eligible for on-site training in MRI scanning.
