What You’ll Work On

Responsible for ensuring divisional compliance with regulations and internal standards for Biosafety as well as serving as Biological Safety Officer for multiple divisions of Abbott. Act as the primary source of expertise for biosafety subject matter including compliance with international regulations and expectations including the US CDC, US USDA, the World Health Organization, and related agencies in other nations where we conduct business. Responsible for establishing and maintaining Biosafety program with clear program elements, goals/priorities, strategy, and resources.

Compliance

Complies with all regulations and procedures in scope of the Biosafety programs.

Ensures compliance with biosafety requirements through internal processes and implementation of strategies.

Track company, industry, and regulatory activities to ensure effective biosafety compliance.

Develops and provides training on the biosafety program elements, systems, or procedures.

Assist Corporate in the development and implementation of biosafety technical standard.

Develop long range plan to support biosafety strategy, considering long term goals and continuous improvement.

Interface with regulators, agencies, and organizations to influence direction of regulations, requirements, and performance expectations.

Represents Abbott with regulators during compliance inspections and permit applications.

Technical

Serves as the leading subject matter expert regarding the hazards/risks and control measures associated with biological materials and pathogens, including bacteria, virus, fungus and protozoan.

Identify emerging regulations or new requirements impacting division products or biological materials used by division sites, communicate to the other division functions and ensure actions are put in place.

Executes a biosafety program that includes corporate requirements and division specific requirements and is aligned with division priorities.

Conducts product Biological Hazard Assessments to identify and minimize biological hazards to our customers.

Develop and maintain formal biosafety systems and programs to ensure adequate oversight. Partner with quality and operations to ensure biosafety requirements are incorporated into process design/development and manufacturing.

Communicates across functions and disciplines and presents data to management.

Project Management

Manages multiple, often concurrent, projects and meets deadlines.

Performs feasibility studies related to project alternatives.

Maintains project controls and reporting for cost, scope, and schedule; develops execution plans.

Understands the business requirements and possible impacts and has a thorough knowledge of the stakeholder needs and biosafety compliance when developing a project scope or program element.

Works with a wide degree of latitude to plan, conduct, and direct projects.

Develops strategy with the sites and/or with the other division functions, interface with consultants, and Corporate EHS leaders.

Has budgetary responsibilities for projects and laboratory analysis in scope of the biosafety programs.

Develops and maintains the biosafety Strategic Planning Process including annual evaluation of effectiveness and compliance of the biosafety program through self-assessment, risk assessments, product, and regulatory changes. This includes monitoring all division manufacturing sites.

Organizational Interface

Represents the Division as primary biosafety contact.

Interacts with both senior management and external personnel on significant biosafety matters.

Prepares and reviews written communication.

Conveys information effectively through formal and informal documents and meetings.

As appropriate, may move forward with action plans without seeking approval.

Exhibits advanced ability to apply concepts of careful communication.

Follows through on goals and incorporates the ideas of others; shares resources, knowledge, and accountability to benefit the objectives of the business.

Establishes professional networks.

Regularly communicates a high-level biosafety summary to management.

Problem Solving / Innovation

Develop solutions for complex problems when necessary; integrates regulatory and operational needs.

Explores multiple alternatives to meet the requirements.

Addresses stakeholders needs.

Develop tools and processes with cross-functional or divisional teams that can benefit not only to biosafety programs but other programs as well.

Required Qualifications

Masters degree with 8 years related experience.

Minimum Licenses and Certifications

Certified Biological Safety Professional (ABSA)

Preferred Qualifications

Biosafety experience highly preferred

Microbiology degree is highly preferred.

The base pay for this position is $109,300.00 – $218,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
