Summary About the Position: Employee independently performs assignments and exercises initiative, judgment, and discretion in executing protocol activities in accordance with accepted policies, procedures, and appropriate rules of etiquette in dealing with high-level Federal and state leaders, general officers, foreign nationals and distinguished visitors. Responsibilities As a Protocol Assistant, you will perform the following duties which is not an all-inclusive list: Assist in the protocol and social planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling of official formal and informal events for Fort Leavenworth staff and visiting distinguished guests. Prepare guest lists, written invitations and place cards, and seating charts for formal events and special occasions. Prepare itineraries based upon time and place of arrival, size and significance of the group, background and interests, length of stay. Assist in planning and managing the overall workflow of the protocol function and makes necessary adjustments, within delegated authority, to meet mission requirements and deadlines. Ensure that appropriate air or surface transportation and appropriate escort officers are provided for each visitor, as necessary. Provide advice and assistance to the Commanding General, Deputy Commanding General, their families and staffs on matters pertaining to protocol and customs of the Army and other services as well as customs and courtesies of other countries. Current Department of Army Civilian Employees Applying on Time-Limited Assignments In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience assisting in the planning of social functions, ceremonies, specials events, and/or conferences; providing administrative support to include maintaining files and records and answering inquiries; and utilizing Microsoft Office and automated databases to compose correspondence and reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). -OR- Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Business Administration, Public Administration, Management, Public Affairs, or other field related to the position. (NOTE: You MUST submit copies of all your transcripts.) -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Clerical Oral Communication Technical Competence Written Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06). This position MAY be made permanent without further competition, contingent upon verification of the incumbents noncompetitive eligibility. Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 13 months by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years; however, return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition. If applicable, returns rights may be negotiated upon selection.
