The job involves conducting field testing at 3M manufacturing and research and development (R&D) facilities and applying the results across several EHS disciplines to support 3M EHS legal compliance and sustainability activities. The position is cross-disciplinary as projects will be conducted with/for the Environmental Operations, Corporate Safety & Industrial Hygiene, and Corporate Environmental Programs groups within the 3M Corporate EHS Department enabling networking and skill development in several areas of 3M EHS as well as networking throughout 3Ms manufacturing operations.As a Project Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:Supporting Primary Responsibilities which include but are not limited to the following:Develop and perform quantitative analysis test methods using gas-phase FTIR spectroscopyConduct gas-phase kinetic rate studies and product off gas experimentsPrepare detailed laboratory reports, data sheets, and other documentation in accordance to U.S. EPA GLPs and the ISO 17025 testing laboratory accreditationConducting field measurements of the concentration of chemicals present in air, water, and solids as well the flow rates of air and water emitted from manufacturing processesConducting industrial hygiene related measurementsConducting laboratory-based measurements of 3M products for emission factor developmentConducting studies of remediation method effectivenessProviding field testing support for ongoing remediation activities.Analysis of lab and field data to:Evaluate manufacturing process and emission control system operational performanceDemonstrate emissions complianceSupport regulatory efforts and remediation goalsProvide EHS management supportSupport industrial hygiene-related worker exposure assessments and incident investigationsSupport water and waste minimization effortsWork with environmental operating group to prepare plants for upcoming stack testing activitiesConduct leak testing of pipes, valves, tanks and flanges using a FLIR camera at manufacturing locations.Validate records of emission sources at 3M plants, review changes in manufacturing facility operations and work with 3M subject matter experts to identify any impacts on air emission permittingDetermine potential emissions (PTE) from 3M manufacturing equipment and operations to support compliance with air permits and regulationsGather information to support the identification and/or verification of waste reduction and water conservation projectsCompany VehicleThis position requires driving a company vehicle at times, which will require pre-employment and ongoing review of motor vehicle history for candidates who are offered and hired for this positionYour Skills and ExpertiseTo set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:Bachelors degree in Science or Engineering discipline or higher (completed and verified prior to start)Minimum of one (1) year of experience with quantitative Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and/or Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) instru ental analysis in a private, public, government or military environment.Current, valid Drivers License.Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:Ability to, on occasion, lift analytical equipment (50 lbs) during field testing.Wear respirator protective equipment during some field tests.PhD or Bachelors degree or higher in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Environmental Engineering from an accredited university in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Environmental EngineeringExperience withField sampling using real-time analytical equipment and the collection of samples for off-line chemical analysis.Gas-phase Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)Analysis of environmental samples using Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS; LC/MS)Aerosol sampling using SMPS, CPC, and APS equipmentSampling from manufacturing processesExperience with Matlab, Visual Basic, LabView, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)Skills includeEffective communications with plant manufacturing personnel, environmental permitting, industrial hygiene and safety personnel as well as state and federal regulatory personnelBasic knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting, and compliance resolutionAdherence to safety practices at industrial manufacturing facilities.Work location:Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work, but require travel to Maplewood or manufacturing facilities based on project duties and staff objectives for the week)Travel: May include up to [30%] [domestic/international]Relocation Assistance: May be authorizedMust…Equal Opportunity Employer – minorities/females/veterans/individuals with disabilities/sexual orientation/gender identity
