BACKGROUND:
The staff of the IRC Dallas office works as a team to provide comprehensive resettlement services- including case management, employment, immigration, and mental health services to newly arrived refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking as they begin to rebuild their lives in the Dallas area.
SCOPE OF WORK:
The Youth Program is comprised of three programs, Refugee School Impact- Early Childhood (children ages 0-5 and their caregiver(s)), Refugee School Impact- Middle School (grade 6-8), and Refugee Youth Mentorship Program (between the ages of 15-21) with the tools and opportunities caregiver need to grow in their understanding of childcare, child discipline, and child-related topics and youths’ need to grow in their academics, regulate emotions, maintain positive cultural identity, social emotional learning, and expand their social circles.
The intern will report to the Youth Intake Specialist and assist in enrolling youth and caregivers in the program. The intern will receive reimbursement for travel expenses and other approved program expenses. The intern position is for the duration of September 2024 to March 2025 and may include evening hours.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Maintain up-to-date knowledge and eligibility criteria for the Refugee School Impact -Early Childhood, Refugee School Impact- Middle School, and Refugee Youth Mentorship programs.
Conduct eligibility screenings for internally and externally referred clients to Refuge School Impact-Early Childhood, Refugee School Impact- Middle School, and Refugee Youth Mentorship programs.
Support client enrollment into the program and refer ineligible clients to community resources as applicable.
Detail each client interaction in accordance with established requirements. Input client information in database(s) and assist with tracking and reporting as needed.
Collaborate effectively with coworkers and partner organizations. Build and maintain relationships with area service providers for the benefit of clients.
Conduct outreach to the community and organizations. Table at events to share flyers and resources
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS:
Interns work hours are 9am-5pm but may include evening hours; Interns must work at least 15 hours each week
The ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area (mainly Dallas but extends to surrounding areas).
Covid vaccination is not required, but highly encouraged.
Understanding of the need to approach and apply case management methods with the goal of client self-sufficiency and sustainability.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Experience working with youth, specifically in the context of educational and social programs.
Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations.
Fluency in a second language such as Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Urdu, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, French, Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, Burmese, Rohingya is highly desirable.
DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
Detail-oriented with the proven ability to meet deadlines, communicate effectively across departments, and demonstrate a positive attitude.
Works well independently.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and navigating platforms such as Teams.
Reliable self- starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multitask, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
