Department Summary:
The N113 Integrated Space C2 department fields capabilities and establishes cross cutting enablers to deliver an integrated resilient Space C2 Enterprise for the Space Warfighter. Specifically, N113 is focused on enabling the Space Systems Command (SSC) Space System Integration Office and to drive impactful change within the Space C2 warfighting enterprise through systems of systems integration across all domains. To ensure SSIO integration solutions are cyber secure across all space portfolios, N113 works with the SSC Chief Information Office (CIO) to shape initiatives and enterprise guidance. N113 proliferates cyber resilient system engineering and integration solutions for advanced near-term rapid capabilities through work with the Space Rapid Capabilities Office (SpRCO) and longer-term Space C2 capabilities enabling closure of kill chain gaps through work with SSC Battle Management Command Control & Communications (BMC3). N113 performs numerous prototyping activities including systems modeling, software architecting and development, and analysis capabilities designed to enable MITRE and sponsor-driven analysis and research in all space mission domains across multiple customers, missions, and technology providers. The research, development, and outcomes of these efforts provide high-quality, comprehensive, quantitative insights for senior government decision makers shaping the future of our nation’s Space policy, operations, and systems. The N113 department is a major contributor to the Space Warfighting Division by enabling joint combat power and superiority in all domains in, from, and through space.
Roles and Responsibilities:
MITRE’s N113 Integrated Space C2 Department is seeking a technically deep and operationally oriented Department Chief Engineer (CE) to provide technical leadership for a set of dynamic and impactful work programs to meet the challenges of realizing the future of Space Warfighting and delivering Space C2 to our mission collaborators & stakeholders. As DCE, you will be responsible for and have broad oversight of the technical integrity and quality of our work program, products & deliverables, the technical teams, and will partner with and support the Department Manager for strategic work-shaping and sponsor relationships. The individual will be a member of the core department leadership team, providing thought leadership and technical guidance to enable the projects within the department to successfully execute the mission areas of our sponsors to include Battle Management Command, Control, and Communications (BMC3), Space Rapid Capabilities Office (SpRCO), Space Systems Integration Office (SSIO), and Space Systems Command S6/ Chief Information Officer (CIO). The Chief Engineer will be an execution partner for the N113 Department Manager. We seek a “thought leader” who will represent our department as the voice of technical excellence and integrity across MITRE, our sponsors, other UARCs/FFRDCs and industry. Successful candidate will be a critical thinker with deep technical skills, and have a demonstrated track record of fostering, promoting and/or fielding innovative ideas and solutions for sponsors.
Key functions include:
Be recognized as expert in technical fields critical to the department’s work program and directly contributes to high-impact solutions. Grow the connective tissue across MITRE and our sponsors to both benefit from and contribute to other work, expertise, and capabilities, including identifying opportunities for integrating and accelerating the collective space work program to drive larger impactful outcomes. Leverage enablers like internal research and laboratories to address warfighter gaps, aligned to our cross-cutting objectives. Create intellectual property, securing patents, publishing, prototyping, and technology transfer that advance technology and foster internal and external collaboration. Outreach, engage and collaborate across the corporation, with academia, industry, FFRDCs/UARCs and government to develop and bring the best solutions to our sponsors which demonstrate MITRE’s FFRDC Differential Value and Culture.
Guide the Department’s technical investments, technical initiatives, lab environments, and development of staff skills in support of MITRE’s Strategy. With the Department Manager, engage with sponsors and shape the work program to understand the sponsor domain and maximize sponsor value.
In close coordination with Department Group Leaders & Project Leaders, ensure the technical strength of our teams, the technical integrity and quality of our deliverables, and establish partnerships or develop lab & infrastructure environments to support the dept work program. Support project leaders by ensuring that we are continuously and effectively leveraging staff, capabilities, and investments from across the corporation to maximize impact to our sponsors.
In support of the Space Warfighting Division & Space Integrated C2 Department vision and goals, assist the Managing Director, Department Manager, and Division Chief Engineer in the transformation of our work program through work-shaping and sponsor interaction to align our efforts to our sponsors’ most pressing needs, priorities and outcomes; anticipate future needs; and apply critical and innovative thinking to help shape our work program to achieve significant impact on our sponsors’ outcomes – now and in the future. Partner with other MITRE Air Force divisions, other divisions within MITRE’s National Security Engineering Center, and MITRE Labs leadership to strengthen the division technical workforce – this includes quality of staff hired, mentoring/ growing staff through job shadowing, and training initiatives to ensure appropriate technical quality is achieved.
Focus on key “seam” mission threads between USSF, and key stakeholders, such as Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Space Development Agency (SDA), and National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) to evolutionally deliver space C2. Build and foster relationships, networks, cross-agency solutions, and potentially new organizational constructs across MITRE’s Space Warfighting Division – bridging out to MITRE’s INDOPACOM & USSPACECOM efforts to drive cross-sponsor approaches to increase the impact of the Integrated Space C2 Department and its stakeholders.

This position will require 50% travel if based in Bedford, MA and 25% travel if based in Colorado Springs, CO or Los Angeles, CA.
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM); or 10 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 7 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Active TS/SCI clearance
Technical Presence:
Technical depth and leadership in systems engineering, architectures, system integration, command and control, communications/networking, and DoD acquisition programs.
Possess demonstrated ability to define complex projects or programs
Leadership Presence:
Communicates in a compelling fashion across the organization (oral and written); inspires trust through vision for the program and the work environment they create; a demonstrated leader MITRE people want to follow.
Effective at developing close working relationships with senior leaders and sponsors as a trusted adviser for the leadership on major initiatives, technical challenges, and priorities.
Proven ability to lead, nurture and develop technical talent and teams
Independent Execution:
Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility to execution of multiple missions across a set of work programs
Self-starter and effective time management skills.
This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Recognized expert in at least one of the following areas: space command and control, architectures, system integration, cybersecurity, space domain awareness, space physics/orbital mechanics, or related field
Familiarity with how emerging space technologies directly relate to supporting the Joint Warfighter
Familiarity with the different Space Systems Command coordinating offices: Space Operations Command (SpOC), Space Training & Readiness Command (STARCOM), Space Warfare Analysis Center (SWAC), United States Space Command (USSPACECOM), Space Rapid Capabilities Office (SpRCO), Department of the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office (DAF RCO), National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the Space Defense Agency (SDA).
Familiarity with the MITRE Mission Value Chain (MVC), MITRE Maturity Model, and MITRE Strategy
MS/PhD in a STEM field and 10 years of related experience
TS/SCI level security clearance with SAP eligibility
