ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF NURSING
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF NURSING
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates with Staffing Coordinator regarding call-ins and staff replacement.
Supervises the staffing coordinator.
Abides by department policies and procedures and interprets them to residents,
relatives and personnel.
Attends in-service programs and administrative meetings as required.
Assists with ongoing education of staff/residents as required.
May assist In-service educator in the training of Certified Nursing Assistant
classes.
Participates in developing, implementation and revision of nursing QA process.
Makes frequent rounds on all nursing units to assess performance and assure
resident care needs are met.
Serves as a nursing administrative resource for the facility in the absence of the
Director of Nursing.
Participates in and assures appropriate assessment of residents.
Assesses staffing needs for shifts and allocates nursing personnel accordingly.
Assists Director of Nursing with development, writing and updating of policies
and procedures.
Works with nurse managers and supervisors to insure that outcomes of nursing
delivery meet patient needs.
Serves as a resource to staff in clinical and managerial decision making.
Assures that practices are consistent with regulatory requirements.
Participates and assists in inspection by regulatory agencies.
Assists in establishing good public relations.
Assists in problem resolution between staff, residents, families and visitors.
Identifies problems and reports to and makes recommendations to the Director
of Nursing.
Interview applicants for position vacancies and makes hiring recommendations
to the Director of Nursing.
Collaborates/prepares with nurse managers and supervisors the performance
evaluations of employees.
May prepare performance appraisals of Nursing and supervisory Nursing staff.
May function in role of Nursing Supervisor, Nurse Manager and/or Employee
Health Nurse.
Disciplines staff and consults with nurse managers/supervisors in disciplinary
action.
Participates as an active member on assigned committees.
Assists with documents and investigates incidents and accidents.
Communicates problems and needs to other departments.
May perform chart audits.
May complete pre-admission nursing assessments on prospective admissions to
the facility.
Supervises and collaborates with Transport Aide regarding coverage of all
resident outside medical appointments.
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of an approved school of nursing, bachelor’s degree in nursing
preferred.
Current registration in this state.
Interest and ability in teaching others and assisting them in their skills.
Capacity to grasp new theories and principles and put them into effect.
Ability to make independent decisions.
Training and ability in comprehensive patient physical assessment.
Knowledge of working in a union environment.
A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse.
Two (2) years managerial and clinical experience in a health care environment
required.
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in long-term care desired.
Knowledge of regulatory standards desired.
MDS training.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Well-lighted, well-ventilated rooms and halls.
Walking, sitting, standing, bending, lifting and moving intermittently during the
work day.
Exposed to infection, odors and subject to personality and mood changes
peculiar to aged and infirmed.
Involved with residents, personnel, volunteers and visitors under all conditions.
Must be available to work more than eight (8) hours per day, or more than forty
(40) hours per week.
Other related duties that may have become necessary or as directed by the
supervisor, department head and/or administration.
