Pay Range: $120,000 – $130,000/yr

The Applications Engineer and Team Leader is responsible for supervising and providing guidance to Level I and II Applications Engineers while maintaining the responsibilities and duties of an Applications Engineer III and managing large quote projects as they arise. The Team Leader will work closely with the department manager to distribute work and ensure weekly deadlines are being met.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervise and lead a team of level I & II applications engineers.

Lead more extensive quotes directing level I, II, and III apps engineers.

Monitor team performance and assign tasks as required.

Provide timely project delivery while maintaining clear and effective communication.

Enforce standard practices within the department.

Maintain the responsibilities and duties of an Applications Engineer III.

Conduct/review concept risk assessments.

Review customer questions generated by your team members, review CMs created, concept creation, mentorship, cost sheet accuracy, quality, and quote/POP document creation and quality.

Research industry trends.

Collaborate on the advancement of tools and technologies within PMD.

Identify opportunities for process optimizations with the department manager.

Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies for design solutions.

Collaborate with other department members to enhance the quoting process and improve the win success rate.

Inform the department manager of project status, required training, team/team member performance, and other vital metrics.

OTHER DUTIES

Work as an applications engineer level III when not acting as a team lead.

LEVEL III DETAILS:

Primary Function and Scope:

A Senior-Level Mechanical Automation Applications Engineer provides in-depth mechanical and electrical concepts, costing, and quote documents for custom machines based on a customers requirements and guidance from the sales group within PMD. This position will have duties including, but not limited to, the following:

A typical application engineer at this level has ten years or more of experience quoting proven automation systems. This person can be categorized into two groups. The first group consists of someone who works alone on projects, while the second group can manage a team for more extensive, more involved quotes. Both groups present solutions to other senior members of the applications group and the brainstorm (BS) team.

Essential Functions

Developed sound, working mechanical, and control solutions to provide on-time technical design concepts for various customer-specific automation applications.

Generate different creative solutions to automation problems using known methods.

Apply expertise in automation technologies, frameworks, and best practices.

Proven track record of leading and managing applications from concept through engineering.

Create accurate 2D machine floor plans with supporting 3D models as required.

Mentor junior applications engineers and provide technical leadership.

Obtain and prepare detailed estimates for labor, material costs, and delivery for all required labor disciplines within PMD.

Analyze data from all compiled resources and write a concise proposal using Word templates.

Analyze the BS direction to ensure a 100% accurate and feasible direction.

Establish timing and sequence charts of all motion-based assembly and test tasks.

Create detailed process diagrams describing the customers process.

Complete peer review of other concepts, costing, and quoting documents.

Follow the quoting process as defined by the applications department.

Lead kick-off meetings when PMD wins a project.

Attending design team meetings as required to guide and support the design teams.

Define the scope of work thoroughly to allow the Project Team to begin work on the system.

Attending post-project review meetings to analyze project successes and opportunities for improvement in terms of profitability and technical satisfaction.

Travel to the customers site to gather project-critical information and assist in automation projects or product development.

Understanding and experience with DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly)

Complete a tolerance analysis as required.

Required to win five or more million annually while maintaining profit margins on quoted projects.

Study YouTube videos of machines like current projects that might be found.

Complete special projects in support of Engineering, Sales, and Marketing, as assigned.

Any other task assigned by management within the scope of the position, as well as federal and state regulations.

Position Requirements

Qualification Requirements: an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and ability required.

Education and Experience:

BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience. Preferred 3.0/4.0 or above grade average

Minimum of ten years experience quoting automation equipment

The applicant must possess a solid working knowledge of the assembly and test automation industries and have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience designing automation machines.

Recommended professional training combined with education in other fields of study

Formal training in GDT and application skills

Language Skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical procedures.

Ability to write technical reports.

Comfortably presented concepts and pricing information in a clear, concise manner suitable for technical audiences

Effective in listening and note-taking.

The applicant must be able to solve practical problems and deal with various variables in situations where only limited information exists.

Ability to interpret information furnished in written, oral, diagrams, or schedule form.

Wide variety of duties requiring considerable judgment to work independently, such as devising new methods, adapting or changing standard procedures to meet new conditions, and making decisions guided by precedent and within established policies.

Required Computer Skills, Ten (10) years or more:

AutoCAD or other 2D

SolidWorks or other 3D products

Advanced skills with Microsoft Office products with a critical focus on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Internet research

Computer savvy and not computer-challenged
