The Role

This position is for a Manger Engineering 3 within the A1B Propulsion Plant Planning Yard (A1B PPPY; CVN 78 / FORD Class Aircraft Carriers; Department E70) having responsibility for leading the A1B PPPY Structures, Shielding, and Hull Outfitting group. The primary duties for this position will be to plan, direct, and coordinate the operations of a technical engineering and design team in support of both CVN 78 Class new ship construction and commissioned ship fleet support efforts (maintenance, overhaul, and modernization). Responsibilities include providing technical leadership/direction to team members for specific engineering projects/programs; providing technical assistance to and acting as an advisor to unit supervisors and staff members within the department and across the sector for resolution of engineering issues; serving as a mentor to supervisors/designers/engineers to develop their knowledge, technical skills, and expertise; developing and providing reports/presentations detailing the results of analyses and/or studies performed to address engineering and design issues; managing multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing work to meet cost, schedule, and quality objectives; development and administration of budgets, schedules, and performance standards.

Must Have

Bachelors Degree and 8 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Masters Degree and 6 years of relevant experience; PhD and 4 years of relevant experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

A general knowledge and understanding of the following: static and dynamic analysis of steel structures in commercial nuclear power and/or naval nuclear propulsion plants; Naval shock analysis requirements for structures and environmental shock qualification of components; modeling techniques and associated programs; 3D modeling (Teamcenter is a plus). Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to work within the A1B PPPY leadership organizational hierarchy with minimal oversight from the department director. Basic Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of engineering/design processes relating to ship systems, a comprehensive understanding of ship construction processes, and significant experience in the area of structural/shock analysis, as well as the demonstrated ability to manage and direct the work of others. Preferred Qualifications: A BS in Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or Engineering Mechanics. An MS in Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or Engineering Mechanics and professional registration is desirable. Prior propulsion plant engineering design and/or construction engineering leadership experience is preferred.
