The Job You Will Perform:

The Safety Engineer at International Paper’s Franklin Mill will provide leadership and support for the Safety and Occupational Health programs at the mill. This position reports to the Safety Manger to develop, implement, support and administer site safety programs to ensure the mill complies with all applicable health and safety corporate initiatives, laws and regulations to achieve an injury free workplace. Pay level will vary depending upon experience and qualifications.

Safety Program Support: (Assignments will be a combination of safety, health and industrial hygiene programs)

Manage mill security team

Participate on mill Emergency Response team and help lead annual training

Lead the incident investigation process for all safety related incidents – assist with development of corrective actions plans resulting from incidents and manage action plans to completion

Coordinate IH exposure assessments

Conduct safety and health training programs

Assist with the development and implementation of policies, procedures, programs, & tools to ensure compliance with government regulations and IP policies in a way that leads to a safe and injury-free work environment

Develop safe standards works practices with line personnel and monitors conformance through safety and housekeeping inspections and audits

Coordinate health and safety audit programs including corrective action plan implementation and tracking – both internal and external

Recommend changes to reduce safety hazards and health risks

Provide tools, information and guidance to the department hourly Safety Coordinators so that their efforts are cohesive, uniform, and coordinated, including annual safety training

Develop an annual safety calendar (training schedule, milestones, significant activities, etc.)

Foster the mill culture change toward a vision of an accident-free workplace by:

Demonstrating behaviors that reflect the core principles of safety and a personal commitment to safety excellence

Systematically communicating activities and recognizing accomplishments

Engaging all mill employees in the safety process and empowering them to take personal ownership for safety results

Bridging the gap between levels in the organization through data analysis, open data sharing, and facilitating thoughtful dialog

Supporting established teams to more effectively accomplish their mission (department safety committees, Mill Safety Leadership Team, Pedestrian Safety Teams, etc.)

The Skills You Will Bring:

Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or technical discipline with significant related experiences

Exposure to OSHA general industry requirements

2 years of experience at a manufacturing facility

Experience in PSM/Process Safety Management is a plus

Strong interpersonal skills with a developed competency to influence others

Strong communication skills (verbal and written). Must be an effective listener

Clear ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects and deadlines

An ability to manage change and conflict

Established skill to execute work based on standards, procedures and systems
