Responsibilities The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. Serves as a student trainee in the Biomedical Engineering department at a VISN 7 medical facility under the Pathways Intern Program in conjunction with an accredited college. Receives on-the-job training related to the Interns academic career goals or field of study. Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties in support of the organizations staff. Specific duties include: As a Student Trainee (Engineering), the incumbent will work under closer supervision performing assignments and completing training. The incumbent will perform general tasks to support the day-to-day operations of the Biomedical Engineering department at the medical center. At the full-performance level, you will be expected to: Perform a variety of standardized and non-standardized engineering tasks to accomplish or provide technical support on assigned projects. Assist in design analysis and modifications by compiling, computing, tabulating and making graphic or model presentations of pertinent data. Review specifications, drawings, technical reports and other documentation. Research standard references, guides, precedents and other sources to obtain pertinent technical information. Prepare drawings and sketches using familiar methods, procedures and data inputs. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. The grade progression for this position is GS-5. Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. Per OPM guidelines, an additional educational requirement exists for this series and occupation: Education: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associates degree. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Communication Critical Thinking Learning Veteran and Customer Focus Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. The incumbent will do some walking in offices, workshops, utility rooms, maintenance, and other work areas. Work may involve carrying lightweight items, such as briefcases, notebooks, test equipment, and work papers, or operating a motor vehicle.
