Job Summary
The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Science. This tenure-track position comes with a 3/3 teaching load with opportunities for additional compensation through summer teaching. The successful candidate will teach online (predominantly synchronous) courses, conduct research, and participate in service to the profession and University. This position is located on the Hattiesburg campus.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Ideal candidates will have a robust research agenda that complements the existing strengths of the faculty and wider University community. In addition, we seek applicants who have the ability to teach a variety courses in emerging information science topics, technology and technical areas, as well as core courses in librarianship, archival and museum studies, and school licensure. Primary job duties include:
Working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.
Conducting research resulting in publication in journals and participation in scholarly conferences.
Teaching in the core curriculum as well as developing new course offerings in the candidate’s area of specialization.
Supporting University and School activities through service and membership in professional organizations.
Supporting undergraduate and graduate students through regular advising and mentorship.
Following School and University policies.
P erforming other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and a Doctoral degree in Library and Information Science or a related field from an accredited college or university is required. Established ability to work in the United States is required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to teach synchronously online
Adept in Microsoft Office applications
Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals
Excellent organization and time-management skills
Resourceful and determined to provide a positive experience for others
Ability to navigate LMS (preferably Canvas)
Ability to work evenings
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working in a professional information setting (i.e., library, archive, museum, etc.) is desired. Experience teaching online is a plus. Ongoing demonstrated scholarship including but not limited to, grant-writing, national presentation and publication experience is preferred.
