Senior Preservation Specialist

Summary This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), St. Louis Preservation and Conservation Branch. This position uses expertise in preservation and digitization to determine the best approach to research and develop projects, consult with other divisions and agencies, train preservation and other divisions and make recommendations on preservation and digitization actions, and schedule, coordinate and execute projects within set deadlines. Responsibilities As a Senior Preservation Specialist, you will: Independently carry out day-to-day operations, program planning and overseeing complex projects for the branch. Serve as the liaison to external and internal departments located at the National Personnel Records Center and keep the Preservation Officer apprised of upcoming projects and issues that impact the St. Louis Preservation Program Labs. Review the quality of work produced to assure the highest level of accuracy and consistency Assist in developing, revising, or updating procedures, manuals, and training guides. Perform training and provide technical guidance or assistance in the methods and techniques of the treatment work, preservation, reformatting and digitization of the holdings at NARA. Requirements Conditions of Employment The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. A one year probationary period may be required. Must successfully complete a background investigation. Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency. The work is a mixture of sedentary activity such as long periods at a computer or worktable as well as physical exertion, such as lifting and transferring boxes of records weighing between 20 and 50 pounds, climbing caster-equipped ladders, utilizing a pallet jack, receipt and organization of laboratory supplies. Work also includes stretching, reaching, long periods of standing and other similar activities, as well as care in lifting and handling objects, and tremor-free manipulation and dexterity while working with archival records. Work may include responding to record emergencies such as wet or fire damaged records once areas are safe to enter. Qualifications You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: Communicating with customers internally and externally to provide information and resolve issues; AND Resolving complex preservation, conservation, reformatting and/or digitization issues; AND Leading a team, program or project, using time management to complete work within set deadlines; AND Analyzing, evaluating or developing formal policies and procedures. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-12, you must have been at the GS-11 level for 52 weeks.
