Position Overview:
Under the general supervision of the Upward Bound Program Director, the Upward Bound Academic Advisor will be responsible for case management duties for the Smith-Cotton High School Upward Bound program. The Advisor will directly advise UB participants from Smith-Cotton High School in the pursuit of the successful completion of a rigorous secondary school program of study and enrollment in a program of post-secondary study following graduation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Upward Bound Academic Advisor: Advises students to make well-informed decisions regarding careers, academic program selection, course selection, standardized test preparation, and financial aid and postsecondary exploration. Meets with students on a regular basis either through weekly class sessions or individual appointments to provide career and academic counseling services. Monitors student grades through target schools student information system to ensure proactive and timely academic advising. Maintains comprehensive student files and the programs electronic database (Student Access), tracks student progress, monitors student participation, class registration, and class scheduling needs. Conducts Student Needs Survey and Educational Action Plans in order to develop specialized academic plans. Develops and facilitates weekly seminar classes and regular Saturday sessions. Organizes and facilitates workshops and special presentations for participants and/or parents dealing with academic success, financial aid/literacy, and social/cultural issues. Assists in the planning and facilitation of college campus visits, cultural activities, and service learning projects. Assists in program promotion, marketing, and recruitment activities. Assists with the selection of participants, the federal Annual Performance Report, and student disciplinary issues. Networks with program constituents at SFCC and target school and outside professionals in regards to program development and success. Educates the public on program specifics and helps to maintain a positive image of the program. Cheerfully performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications:
Knowledge and Interest: Must possess a desire to effectively dissolve socio-economic barriers to higher education. Have a genuine interest in, and working knowledge of first-generation college students. Maintain a consistent commitment to ethical business and management practices. Have knowledge of data-driven decision-making, strategic planning, and resource allocation. Individual must be computer proficient and have knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Communicate effectively both written and verbal. Enjoy coordinating people and resources to create educational and cultural experiences for high school students that result in positive student outcomes. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality. Education: Bachelors Degree required. Degrees in education, social work, counseling, or a closely related field preferred. Experience: Experience working with a TRiO program, federally funded grant program, social services or education preferred. Preference given to those candidates with similar background to UB students and experience working with a TRiO program.

Additional Experience to be Considered:
Work involves sedentary to light work in an office setting. There is frequent sitting, with walking, standing and stooping occasionally required. There is an occasional need to lift objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. During the school year (A gust – May) some night and weekend work may be required to facilitate workshops and field trips. During the Summer Academic Academy, in the months of June and July, all Upward Bound staff may expect to work early mornings and evenings along with normal hours. The regular 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. workday may frequently be extended or flexed as daily needs dictate. SAA hours are flexible and set at the discretion of the Program Director.
