Job Description:
The fellowship will provide ample opportunity in a highly productive academic setting to participate in research and learn the skills necessary to become a successful musculoskeletal clinician researcher. The Fellow will work with a lead faculty mentor throughout the year and several project supervisors who are pediatric orthopedic faculty at SRC. Each Fellow will be mentored closely by a group of attending surgeons in our program and will meet with the faculty weekly to ensure satisfactory supervision and mentorship. The Fellow will work as a crucial part of research teams in various Centers for Excellence at SRC with the responsibilities listed below.
The Fellow will be responsible for a variety of research projects (6 or more) designed to answer clinically relevant questions and address problems in the areas of pediatric orthopedic trauma, sports medicine, spine, hip, and foot disorders. The Fellow will have the opportunity to learn about patient recruitment for various ongoing large prospective registries, formulate research hypotheses including identifying pertinent clinical variables, and critically evaluate the medical literature via attendance at several journal clubs and research related lectures throughout the year. The Fellow will learn basic statistical analyses by having the opportunity to consult with and work with a PhD-level statistician and learn data acquisition and management skills to maximize research efficiency. The Fellow will also gain clinical and operative experience in pediatric orthopedics.

Duties/Responsibilities
Assistance in the development of research protocols, Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, patient recruitment, data collection, abstract and manuscript preparation, and presentation of results. The Fellow will serve as the lead person in patient recruitment and data collection of various studies deemed appropriate by the mentoring faculty members.
The Fellow will attend orthopedic teaching conferences (Monday PM, Tuesday AM, Wednesday AM, Friday AM) and be exposed to clinical care and surgical management of patients through shadowing in outpatient clinics and OR.
The Fellow will be integrated into the research team consisting of faculty members, research coordinators, other ancillary staff, and attend research conferences/meeting.
The Fellow will learn data acquisition and management skills to maximize research efficiency.
The Fellow will learn an integrative approach to clinical and research care using modern EMR tools to capture discreet clinical data as research elements.
Required Skills/Abilities
The applicant must be enrolled in medical school in US at the time of application.
Required: Strong critical thinking skills; highly motivated; able to work well independently and in teams; strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills; basic understanding of statistics.
Preferred: Completion of core clinical clerkships (e.g. current third-year medical student); experience carrying out research projects through publication; experience making PowerPoint presentations; proficiency with Excel and data analysis; demonstrated interest in orthopedic research.
