Transportation Utility Worker – Part Time
BEAUMONT INDEPENDENT
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Assist in the acquisition of parts, supplies, and maintaining inventory of parts for repairing vehicles. Assist dispatching with assigning vehicles. Assist in the fueling, lubricating, cleaning, and minor maintenance and repair of buses.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
– High school diploma or GED preferred
– Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License (Class B with Passenger and School Bus endorsement)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
– Must be able to pass drug and alcohol test
– Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
– Acceptable driving record
– Ability to operate a bus
– Knowledge of auto parts and terminology
– Knowledge of purchasing procedures
– Ability to use personal computer and software
Experience:
– Previous experience in shop or warehouse preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Fuel, wash and clean school buses and other district vehicles.
2. Load and unload hard drives from school buses for video monitoring system.
3. Contact vendors to check on availability of parts and supplies.
4. Locate and requisition all parts needed for vehicle repair.
5. Maintain the RTA database to track all parts and inventory.
6. Pick up parts ordered as needed or arrange for delivery.
7. Loan and unload delivery trucks.
8. Open crates and other containers to unpack items received and inspect for damage and defects.
9. Verify accuracy of shipments by counting, weighing, or measuring and comparing size, weight, description, and coded numbers with information on invoice or packing slips and purchase orders; record any discrepancies or damage.
10. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computer records required including computerized parts inventory.
11. Maintain accurate records of all fuel used.
12. Maintain records on parts used, time spent on labor, and cost of each repair job.
13. Detect and resolve problems with incorrect orders, invoices, and shipments.
14. Compile and submit reports and records as needed.
15. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
16. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
17. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are correctable to supervisor immediately.
18. Assist with the assignment and dispatch of buses after hours for any situation that may occur.
19. Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including keeping the shop, parts room, bus parking areas, and other assigned locations clean.
20. Serve as a substitute bus driver as needed.
21. Work irregular hours and respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
22. Perform other duties as assigned.

– Frequent walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting (45 pounds and over), heavy carrying (45 pounds and over).

– May work prolonged or irregular hours
– Work outside and inside, around moving objects, with vehicle and machinery with moving parts.
– Frequent exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline and diesel fuels.
