Description
Under general supervision of the Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Supervisor, this position is responsible for the maintenance, operation, repair, and testing of electrical/electronic traffic control devices, various communication devices and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) components. Also includes maintaining signal structures, overhead indications and all hardware related to traffic signalization devices.
Principal Duties
– Perform tasks related to the maintenance, installation, repair, and testing of a variety of electrical/electronic traffic equipment in a safe, prudent, and professional manner and in accordance with city policy, national electric code and the Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD). Equipment to include but not limited to underground cables, traffic signal cabinets and overhead signal components.
– Troubleshoot signal systems in order to locate malfunctions such as shorts, open or grounded circuits.
– Prepare and accurately complete all necessary work orders, reports, and forms.
– Maintain and repair School Zone Flasher System and Warning Flashers.
– Upload / download data between computer, signal controllers and other ITS equipment.
– Assist with inspections and help identify traffic signal equipment needed within the Traffic Systems Division.
– Utilize cable locator to locate underground signal cables and mark with paint and/or flags energized and de-energized electricals cables and conduits to prevent damage by any construction activities.
– Perform other related tasks and duties as directed or assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
High school graduate or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience working with electrical/electronic circuitry; or a minimum of one (1) year traffic signal experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the job Must possess a valid Class C Texas Driver License and maintain a good driving record
Possess or have the ability to acquire Work Zone Safety Certification within six (6) months from date of hire
Possess or have the ability to acquire International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Certification Level I within one (1) year from date of hire
Ability to utilize hand tools and electronic test equipment
Ability to effectively communicate with city employees and others orally and in writing
Ability to properly setup a traffic control work zone within six (6) months from hire date
Knowledge of energized circuits
Ability to read, comprehend and analyze blueprints and schematics
Ability to respond after hours to emergencies
Availability and willingness to work rotation schedule for Standby and On-Call after hour support which includes evenings, weekends, holidays, and catastrophic weather events
Must live within 45 minutes response radius from College Station City limits

– Work is performed in an outside environment in which incumbents are required to operate an aerial bucket truck, must be able to utilize hand tools and electronic test equipment, and may be exposed to physical hazards, health and safety risks while working in and around moving/high speed vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
– Routine work assignments typically involve wor ing in extreme weather conditions; heat, rain, and frigid temperatures for an extended period of time.
– Routine work assignments typically involve some combination of walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling, as well as standing for extended periods of time; and requires the necessary physical strength/ability/dexterity to lift up to 80 pounds.
