Description
Under general direction of the Cemetery Sexton, the Horticulture Crew Leader participates in and leads an assigned crew involved in the maintenance of the Parks and Recreation Departments landscaped areas, sign beds and cemeteries and some City landscaped areas.
Principal Duties
Responsible for the daily operation of the horticulture crew as lined out by the Cemetery Sexton.
Function as on site management of maintenance contract and first line of contact for maintenance contract vendor.
Prune trees and other landscape material in cemeteries to clear hazards and apply fertilizers, mulch and pesticides to City Cemeteries, Parks landscaped areas and planting beds and some City beds as assigned.
Perform watering, landscape planting and maintenance operations for City Cemeteries, Parks landscaped areas and planting beds and some City beds as assigned.
Plant annual color and nursery stock in sign beds and landscape area in the parks system, City ROW and on City property.
Assist in irrigation maintenance and with the Irrigation Specialist watering needs.
Participate in the maintenance of the horticulture system by operating a variety of equipment such as edgers, line trimmers, brush chippers, and various other hand and power tools
Assist with preparing for special events as needed.
Inspect and conduct preventative and routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
Assist with purchases, collecting bids and writing specifications for division supplies.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
High School Diploma or G.E.D., one (1) year experience related to area of assignment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform theessential duties of the job
Valid Texas Drivers License
Knowledge of landscape materials, bed maintenance and horticulture
Knowledge of techniques of performing landscape work
Horticultural experience with a variety of plant material utilized in the area
Knowledge of native plant selections, antique roses, and Xeriscape principles
Have, or able to obtain within 6 months of hire, a Texas Department of Agriculture non-commercial applicator license for herbicides and pesticides
