Plant Physiologist/Soil Scientist/Agronomist

Summary This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, Cropping Systems Research Laboratory, Wind Erosion and Water Conservation in Lubbock, TX. In these positions, you will be responsible for working in collaboration with research scientists from various applied disciplines to develop new solutions for dryland farming production including crop rotations and cover crops, tillage operations, rain harvesting, fertility management, and other agronomic inputs. Responsibilities Work as a team member to provide input data of soils, crops, and weather data in support of Unit scientists and serve as a resource for cropping systems models that apply to dryland production. Document soil physical and chemical properties using established techniques to measure soil texture, soil density, and soil hydraulic properties. Attend meetings to discuss the needs of researchers and make presentations at conferences, workshops, and professional meetings. Build soils databases that characterize the soil physical, chemical, and hydraulic properties, and soil elevation maps of the major soil series of the southern region of the Texas High Plains. Use simulation techniques, and statistical methods for data storage, retrieval, and manipulation of large data sets using Geographic Information System (GIS) data and imaging. Archive and curate information in databases that link the synergistic effect of how variables interact to determine crop yield. Work closely with a crop modeler to evaluate the sustainability of different agronomic practices associated with dryland production to harvest rainfall across the major soil series of the region. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Time in grade: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. Basic Requirements for Plant Physiology Series, 0435: Degree: botany or plant physiology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 10 semester hours in plant physiology. Evaluation of Education: The 10-semester-hour requirement in plant physiology is specific. Course work is qualifying if it dealt with plant physiology, some phase of plant physiology, or methods and techniques applied in plant physiology work. Other course work in borderline areas should be evaluated on the basis of content. Basic Requirements for Soil Science Series, 0470: Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirements for Agronomy Series, 0471: Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management. OR Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Graduate Education: Agronomy, or one of the related disciplines or fields of science, such as plant physiology, soils, or genetics, where the curriculum or pattern of training placed major emphasis on field crops or agronomy. Graduate study in related fields, such as botany, plant pathology, and biochemistry may also be qualifying, provided it placed a sufficient amount of emphasis on agronomy. Evaluation of Education: Course work in such subjects as botany, plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant breeding or genetics, plant ecology, plant pathology, microbiology, agronomy, or those dealing with basic soil-water-plant relationships of an agronomic or ecologic nature may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in the basic plant sciences. Agronomy courses include agronomy, field crops, field crop production or management, soil and crop management, plant breeding and development, weed control, and similar courses, including those in soils, biochemistry, plant physiology, etc., provided they dealt with principles, methods, or procedures that are applied directly in agronomic work and in the solving of agronomic problems. AND In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualification requirements. GS-12: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting and analyzing data related to weather or soil; integrating different data sets for analysis; and collaborating with other scientific staff. GS-13: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting and organizing data; establishing collaborative relationships with stakeholders and other scientific personnel; presenting scientific data or results to both scientific communities and the general public; publishing research results in peer reviewed journals; and utilizing specialized scientific tools and equipment. GS-14: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience creating simulation models; coordinating, planning, conducting, and leading interdisciplinary agricultural or conservation research activities; establishing collaborations with stakeholders and peers; presenting research findings and publishing research results in peer reviewed journals; and conducting outreach activities such as workshops or presentations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
