Position Announcement

 

Utah Valley University is seeking a Faculty, Tenure Track, Assistant Professor – School Counseling. UVU invites applications for a full-time three semester tenure-track faculty position in School Counseling. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong passion for school counseling, along with a record of excellence in teaching and scholarship within the field. This individual will teach graduate courses in School Counseling and other courses per their training and experience. The position begins August 1, 2025.

 

Under the direction of the Dean and the Department Chair of Graduate Education, designs, prepares, and teaches graduate courses in School Counseling, and undergraduate courses as needed. Supports the scheduling of courses in School Counseling. Assists with the field placements and site visits for School Counseling. Works with state entities and related UVU departments for program development. Participates in scholarly activities. Serves on university or state committees as relevant to the program. Participates in the School of Education and Program accreditation process. Attends meetings in the School of Education, as needed, to coordinate programming and student success. Supports the review of graduate applications and coordinates interviews for students interested in the School Counseling Program. Engages with students and colleagues in service across campus and in the community. Teach graduate school counseling courses (approximately 30 credits a year)2. Collaborate on department business, including the progression of students in the program3. Supervise future school counselors in clinical settings4. Advise school counselors regarding career paths and course registration5. Meet with prospective students and help with orientation activities

 

Summary of Responsibilities

 

• Designs, prepares, and teaches graduate courses in School Counseling, and undergraduate courses as needed. Prepares all instructional materials (to include course syllabi, exams, readings, instructions, visual aids, and other materials) in electronic and paper format. Maintains and submits accurate and current records concerning student accountability, attendance, and performance. Maintains office hours.

• Supports the scheduling of courses in School Counseling. Assists with the field placem
ents and site visits for School Counseling. Supports the review of graduate applications and coordinates interviews for students interested in School Counseling. Serves on committees and attends faculty and other meetings as assigned. Assists school counseling steering comm ttee, department chair, staff and faculty in maintaining an effective program. Effectively and accurately participates in the School of Education and Program accreditation process. Develop positive relationships with students, colleagues, administration, and other education stakeholders. Works with state entities and related UVU departments for program development.

• Improve professionally and maintain currency in the courses taught. Participate in scholarly activities and produces scholarly work.

• Performs other job related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

 

Graduation from an accredited institution with a doctorate degree in a field closely related to the field of instruction (or ABD with dissertation defense scheduled – degree must be in hand by position start date)

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

• Two years of college/university teaching experience

• Earned relevant professional license or credentials

• Evidence of scholarly pursuits and potential

 

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

 

• Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content.

• Knowledge of subject matter and course content.

• Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques in upper and lower division courses.

• Knowledge of student management, motivation, evaluation; evaluation of (peer and self) instruction.

• Demonstrated knowledge of program and curriculum development and evaluation.

• Knowledge of and expertise in current trends in education, engaged learning and service learning, learning technologies (e.g. digital technologies for classroom management and distance education), public presentation, outcomes measurement and grant writing.

• Skills in effective instructional strategies and techniques.

• Effective interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

• Skills in modifying course content, developing original course content, and delivering course content in person, online, or in hybrid formats.

• Skills in conducting and disseminating original research in publication and presentation format.

• Skills in developing, leading, and maintaining committees and work groups.

• Ability to manage, motivate, and evaluate students and instruction.

• Ability to communicate effectively.

• Ability to relate to students in and outside of the classroom.

• Ability to facilitate the growth and development of the program.

• Ability to maintain a spirit of collegiality with colleagues, students, and administrators even in stressful times.

• Ability to conduct research for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university.
