The new Duffield Institute for Animal Behavior invites applications for a qualified dog trainer in the Section of Behavior. Duffield Institute for Animal Behavior is endowed by a $12.1M grant from the Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation, ensuring that the institute will be a world leader in advancing the discipline of animal behavior. The Duffield Institute for Animal Behavior builds on Cornells expertise to better understand animal behavior and improve the lives of pets and people who share their lives with them.

What you will do:

  • Work closely with boarded behavior clinicians to implement appropriate training programs to address and resolve problem areas, including aggression, separation anxiety, noise phobia, specific to generalized anxiety, compulsive disorders, and other emotional disorders.
  • Develop suitable training and behavior modification plans for animals, ensuring they are followed consistently and accurately, with appropriate documentation.
  • Teach clients scientifically-based methods (including positive reinforcement training, environmental enrichment, and desensitization/counterconditioning) as part of the behavior modification plan as prescribed by the clinician. .
  • Teach animals to follow basic cues using various approaches that are best suited to each animals personality and attributes
  • Assist clients with understanding their pets, safely live with them, and help them reduce their pets fear, anxiety, stress, and conflict through behavioral therapy techniques

Employees working in the animal hospital must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree with a minimum of two years of specialization in behavior modification, with a focus on ethical handling and animal welfare, using the LIMA (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive) and Humane Hierarchy models or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members
  • Strong animal handling skills and demonstrated excellence in training outcomes.
  • Meet the physical demands of the position, which include prolonged standing and kneeling, lifting and restraining animals
  • One or more of the following training certifications:
    • CPDT-KA, CPDT-KSA, CBCC-KA
    • KPA-CTP
    • PMCT
    • CTC
    • AVBT / VTS Behavior
    • Any of the IAABC certifications

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
