The Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Institute (AMMI) at Rowan University seeks a qualified, competent, professional, and service-oriented specialist to meet the technical support needs of our growing personnel, laboratory facilities, and research and project endeavors.
The candidate must have experience in working with engineers and scientists, creative project development and management skills, and excellent communication skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, must be capable of multi-tasking on many difficult problems in a fast-paced environment, and must be available to work in a flexible schedule manner that may include some evening hours. Experience in academic settings with wet laboratory facilities and associated equipment is preferred.
The technical support specialist will work closely with all AMMI personnel, including students, faculty, and staff.
Their duties will include:
• Work closely with AMMI’s existing Technical Support Specialist;
• Assist with research and contract work being conducted within AMMI;
• Assist AMMI’s administrative assistant with purchasing supplies, consumables, and equipment;
• Utilize a wide range of fabrication technologies and maintain currency with state-of-the-art technology and software;
• Maintain and utilize a wide range of laboratory equipment, including, but not limited to, optical microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, mechanical testing machines, rheometers, spectrometers, chromatography units, thermal analysis equipment, presses, and 3D printers;
• Work closely with Rowan’s Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and other campus technicians to ensure and maintain laboratory safety and compliance;
• Oversee the troubleshooting of equipment issues;
• Conduct laboratory, semi-pilot scale, and pilot-scale experiments;
• Acquire a wide knowledge of university policies and procedures;
• Provide individual and group training to students, staff, and faculty on laboratory safety procedures, and the proper and safe use of instrumentation;
• Develop and maintain up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all major equipment;
• Maintain safety and regulatory standards, and monitor laboratories to ensure safety;
• Establish and conduct preventive maintenance of all equipment;
• Maintain laboratory inventory, including chemical and consumables inventories;
• Coordinate with all stakeholders, such as manufacturers, sponsors, partners, and research team members to ensure that all tasks are met; and
• Contribute to other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
• Education: Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or a closely related field.
• Experience: One year of professional experience.
Required:
• Experience in the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, including, but not limited to, optical microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, mechanical testing machines, rheometers, spectrometers, chromatography units, thermal analysis equipment, presses, and 3D printers
Preferred:
• Working knowledge of chemistry analytical equipment
• Working knowledge of polymers and polymeric composites, including standard quality control test methods
• Working knowledge of benchtop and pilot-scale synthesis techniques
