This position requires a validClass (B) driver licensewith an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Departments Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:
three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and
a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
Performs tree trimmings, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
Ability to read and understand job related materials and fill out reports and forms.
Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures.
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on frequent basis.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.

OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. A valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire. While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Correction inmates. This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires one year of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.
