Description of Job

The Taxation Divisionpromotes voluntary compliance with all tax laws through information, education, assistance and customer service. A Tax Examiner reviews tax returns for accuracy and completeness, ensures the tax return can be processed as filed, resolves errors and contacts taxpayers to obtain any missing information. Furthermore, Tax Examiners can be responsible for analyzing accounting files, issuing refunds or bills, calculating penalty and interest, collecting delinquent taxes, handling taxpayer complaints, adjusting for discrepancies and working with other taxing authorities such as the Internal Revenue Service, local municipalities or agencies in another state.

Primary Duties:

Taxation Analysis and Processing –

Analyze accounts, tax return adjustments, assessments or documentation against Colorado Statutes, regulations, rulings and tax guidelines.

Ensure metrics and data are up to date and accurate.

Research issues and make corrections.

Process, audit and adjust accounts and information in the system.

Resolve taxpayer issues and examine new documentation and update systems with changes.

Identify fraudulent refund claims based on Discovery criteria.

Customer Support –

Educate, troubleshoot and assist customers by answering tax questions and determining the necessary guidance or course of action.

Respond to customers via web messaging, emails, letters and phone.

De-escalate customers by problem solving and providing appropriate solutions.

This position occasionally reports to the Lakewood Office for training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet one of the following or any combination of experience/education to meet the minimum (MQ) qualifications:

OPTION 1:

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

Two years of experience in bookkeeping, technical accounting, tax administration, economics, finance and/or related experience.

OR

OPTION 2:

Additional appropriate education in accounting, business, economics, and/or finance will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

State experience with GenTax software

Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel

Previous experience with tax knowledge

Attention to detail

Experience in a customer service role

Analytical skills

Conditions of Employment with the CDOR :

Employees are in a position of public trust in the performance of their job duties and must operate in a manner that maintains the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and public confidence.

As a condition of employment with the CDOR, all personnel must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations, therefore all employees must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of their tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with this policy. Final candidates must also complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment. Certain positions based on duties may require scheduled background investigations .
