DESCRIPTION

Come join the City of Long Beach! Our Community Recreation Services Bureau, in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, is seeking amazing Recreation Program Leaders to lead the Mobile Recess Program. This program allows for Mobile Recess trucks to establish recreational play zones within designated neighborhood streets and spaces throughout the City. Recreation Leaders will provide an array of free activities to for youth ages 5 to 14 (grades K-8), including homework help, arts and crafts and fitness activities. Mobile Recess is free and supplies and equipment will be provided at no cost. The program will follow all safety protocols and will offer no larger than a 14:2 participant-to-staff ratio. Space is limited and registration will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis. This position is a limited-term position, subject to available funding by the Long Beach Recovery Act. Duration of the assignment is to be determined.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part time staff and a budget of $74 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.

The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, Non-Career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions .

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under direction, design, plan, and oversee implementation of Mobile Recess site locations throughout the City that include various recreational program activities for kids aged 5 – 14.

Under direction, assign and monitor staff and ensure staff attend in-service and training sessions.

Drive Mobile Recess truck when needed.

Oversee participant behavior, program risk management and safety of participants and staff at all times.

Attend all mandatory staff meetings and in-service and training sessions.

Ensure the health, safety and well-being of the children in your care at all times.

Adhere to the department dress code by maintaining a neat and clean personal appearance.

Implement the department and site administrative and record keeping policies and procedures.

Performs all other assigned duties as requested by the lead staff and/or supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

This position is open to all candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:

Must meet at least one of the options below:

(Option A) – Three (3) years (or equivalent 750 hours total) of part-time experience (paid or unpaid) working in recreation or a related field ;OR,

(Option B) – Seventy-two (72) units of college education, including a minimum of 16 units in recreation, childcare or a related field ;OR,

(Option C) – A combination of education and experience as outlined above.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Must be willing to drive the Mobile Recess truck for programs and special events.

Must be willing to work a flexible schedule and assist various programs at various park locations.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in recreation programs, childcare, sports, and/or other related areas is desirable.

Experience working with children and adults with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Experience leading and working in a diverse team.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

Outstanding customer service and strong organizational, administrative and program management skills.

Ability to relate well to children, parents, and staff (school and agency).

Ability and willingness to adapt to a changing environment.
