Join us as a Field Technician (Field Research Assistant) and be part of our dedicated team supporting innovative seed research on the westside of Kauai!

Job Description:

The Field Research Assistant (Field Technician) will support the seed research program by performing a variety of routine tasks, including pollination and harvest of corn plants according to established research protocols. Responsibilities will vary with the crops growth stage and the nature of the work.

Key tasks include:

Field and Shade House Activities:

Pollination of corn plants

Harvesting corn ears

Planting, thinning, and weeding

Tissue sampling and transplanting

Transpotting and plant tagging

Seedling rearray and plant cutting

Husk back harvest

Pest management (e.g., pesticide applications)

Sample Processing:

Preparation of supplies

Sorting, shelling, weighing, and counting

Preparation for shipping and seed packaging

General Facility Operations:

Clean-up and organization of samples and supplies

Other routine and non-routine tasks as needed

Equipment Use:

Operating powered tools and machinery (e.g., mowers, weed whackers, blowers)

Health monitoring or respirator medical clearance may be required for certain tasks, and the supplier will be informed if this is necessary. The Field Assistant must follow both written and oral instructions, receiving general instructions for routine tasks and detailed hands-on training for new tasks. Attention to detail is essential.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift 40 lbs

Capability to walk on uneven field surfaces for 8 or more hours per shift

Comfort working with and around plants and plant pollens

Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods

Commitment to safety as a condition of employment

Skills:

Research assistant tasks

Pollination and harvesting techniques

Planting, thinning, weeding, and pest management

Sample processing (sorting, shelling, weighing)

General facility operations

Use of powered tools and machinery

Attention to detail

Ability to follow written and oral instructions
