Biological Scientist

Position Objective: Provide services as a Biological Scientist in support of the overall functions of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This individual will provide technical laboratory support for the NINDS Development Therapeutics and Pharmacology Unit.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan and administer biological research programs 1
Study basic principles of plant and animal life, such as origin, relationship, development, anatomy, and function 2
Identify, classify, and study structure, behavior, ecology, physiology, nutrition, culture, and distribution of plant and animal species
Develop and maintain liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings
Collect and analyze biological data about relationships among and between organisms and their environment 3
Monitor and observe experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation by research personnel
Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings
Coordinate the work of biological technicians and technologists and other scientists
Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers
Maintain laboratory equipment
Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples
Analyze laboratory findings
Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data
Monitor operational procedures in technical environments to ensure conformance to standards
Interpret research or operational data
Record research or operational data
Meet with lab members to present updates – Weekly
Work products and documents related to maintaining and culturing human and
mouse cancer cell lines for in vivo experiments; prepare mouse and human tumor cells for in vivo tumor implantations; perform animal work – Daily
Work products and documents related to maintaining records of all experiments in laboratory notebook; maintain stocks of available cancer cell lines in liquid nitrogen and update inventory; maintain and catalog recombinant DNA stocks, plasmids and
vectors, flow cytometry antibody stocks and tissue bio-specimens – Daily
Work products and documents related to perform histology and histological labeling techniques including immunostaining; operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment – Daily
Work products and documents related to analyzing data and assist with preparing presentations for meetings; attend laboratory meetings and present findings
to staff; work with staff on general laboratory maintenance and work with vendors to ensure equipment maintenance agreements are in place to repair and maintain proper function – Daily
Basic Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Biology required
Good Laboratory Practice certification
Experience in Microsoft Office Suite and NIH POTS
Background in molecular techniques, demonstrate ability to perform experiments
Assist in evaluation results of results including those in published literature.
Proficiency in the operation of computer and general data acquisition programs.
Ability to acquire knowledge in new fields and assist with publications.
Minimum Qualifications:
Excellent time management skills required.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
