Job Description

The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Tax & Alcohol Compliance Division is seeking aRevenue Examiner 3 to join their corporate tax team. This division is responsible for all facets of tax processing from the receipt of returns and payments through examination, audit and collection activity.

The Tax & Alcohol Compliance Division consists of three operating units:

Sales/Excise Tax & Alcohol Regulation

Individual/Withholding Tax & Alcohol Licensing

Collection Services

In this position you will be responsible for:

Understanding and implementing tax law, accounting methods, and auditing procedures.

Performing complex office audits in multiple tax types and completing research and investigations to determine taxability

Communicating clearly and concisely, working independently, and exercising objective and accurate decision making

Providing training and lead worker responsibilities to accomplish program objectives

Answering questions from employees and taxpayers

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following:

Training and developing processes, procedures, training materials and continuous improvement plans

Mentoring and coaching trainee’s, able to give effective instruction and feedback

Auditing multiple tax types

Resolving escalated issues

Experience working with IDR software applications

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in any field and experience equal to two years of full-time work in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.

2) All of the following (a and b):

a. One year of full-time work experience (as described in number one); and

b. A total of five years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to five years of full-time work in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.

4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to eighteen months of full-time work as a Revenue Examiner 2.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
