The Valent BioSciences manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Valent BioSciences broad portfolio of fermentation products.
Description of Job:
As the Sr. Fermentation Engineer at Valent BioSciences you will be responsible to meet all safety, quality, delivery and cost goals set by VBS Management. You will have knowledge of fermentation science and biochemical engineering principles, theory and practice with special focus on microbial fermentation operations in an industrial setting or a strong interest in acquiring such skills. You will also act as mentor and leader to Production Specialists and Interns.
Key Responsibilities:
Support and comply with all safety and environmental policies.
Track yield and quality data for each fermentation batch to identify improvement areas.
Analyze production data to recommend and implement lean manufacturing projects.
Develop solutions to enhance fermentation, recovery, and formulation processes.
Maintain and update production master batch records, SOPs, and training manuals.
Troubleshoot and drive root cause analysis to implement corrective actions.
Lead cost-saving initiatives while maintaining product quality and yield.
Ensure efficient operation of fermenters and related equipment.
Provide technical support and training for production teams.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement and introduce new technologies.
Sponsor capital investments and technical changes.
Additional Responsibilities:
Assist with new product development projects.
Write and execute process validation procedures.
Conduct experiments to improve quality, yield, and reduce costs.
Develop statistical models for process optimization.
Perform other duties as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
BS in chemical engineering, bioengineering, or related field (MS or Ph.D. preferred).
Experience with industrial-scale microbial fermentation is ideal.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse team.
Proficient in computer skills; process control/automation knowledge is a plus.
Six Sigma and process optimization experience are advantageous.
Willingness to work off-shift and weekends as needed.
