School/College/Division Description
The history department is one of the larger units in UWM’s College of Letters and Sciences, located on the third and fourth floors of Holton Hall. It offers undergraduate majors and minors, a Ph.D. program, and a range of M.A. options including a public history concentration and joint MA/ MLIS degrees with the School of Information Studies. Every semester history classes are taken by hundreds of students across the university. Currently the department has around 25 teaching and research faculty, 150 majors and minors, and 35 graduate students, some of whom are employed as teaching assistants. Departmental activities include research talks and a major annual lecture, student clubs, awards and fellowships for students, several annual receptions and training events, research and travel support for faculty and graduate students, relationships with donors, and shared governance activities such as faculty meetings.
Job Summary
The Administrative Assistant III of the Department of History is responsible, through the Chair, to the Executive Committee for the management of the department’s budget, personnel system, support of research activities, Foundation accounts, interaction with College and University offices and review and revision of operating procedures. The Administrative Assistant III acts as lead worker and coordinates the administrative staff and student workers, exercising independent judgment in performing the administrative duties involved in running a large academic department. The Administrative Assistant III also provides administrative support to the Director of Graduate Studies and the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
Minimum Qualifications
Evidence of at least one (1) year of administrative office management experience in a professional setting
Evidence of competence in Microsoft Office Suite , including email, word-processing, and spreadsheet functions
Evidence of at least one (1) year of experience with business and/or budget record-keeping
Preferred Qualifications
Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a small core team and to interact with dozens of other stakeholders
Evidence of high attention to detail, including initiation and follow-up of routine tasks
Demonstrated ability to oversee administrative procedures, technologies, and personnel
Experience with specific UWM and/or UW System procedures and administrative systems used by academic departments
Target Salary Range $21.00 – $23.00
