The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks a Medical Technologist to join the Serology and Immunology team. This person utilizes their attention to quality and knowledge of scientific processes to perform high level serological testing procedures to meet client needs. This person is extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads and work schedules, and has exemplary time management skills. Their positive attitude allows them to effectively communicate under pressure to support unit initiatives in a collaborative, team-based environment.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform a comprehensive range of routine to moderately complex diagnostic testing in the Serology & Immunology Laboratory on a rotational basis
  • Closely follow detailed testing protocols, with strict attention paid to all steps, as well as reagent lot numbers, expiration dates, inventory status, calibration status and QC results
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues; escalate to Lab Management when appropriate
  • Actively uphold the established Quality Assurance System
  • Adhere to and monitor Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other laboratory quality documents
  • Participate in daily lab care; prepare reagents; assist to maintain laboratory chemical and supply inventories; perform lab organization, disinfection, and disposal of biohazardous waste

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Biological Science, Animal Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or other related science, with up to two years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time at lab benches, workstations or while using laboratory equipment or instrumentation
  • Experience using manual and automated pipettes
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 20 pounds
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and understanding of diagnostic immunology
  • Experience with performing ELISA and/or similar serological technologies
  • Experience working within an organization with an established Quality Assurance Program
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position

This position is 39 hours per week. While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.

The Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high-visibility and high-volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.

The Serology & Immunology Laboratory develops and uses fully validated serological assays to detect antibodies, antigens, or biomarkers as indicators for infectious diseases in production animals, companion animals, and zoo species.
