Job Description:
Due to substantial growth in our business L3Harris has an immediate need for an Optical Engineer. We are seeking an advanced professional with practical knowledge of the photonics area.
This key role will provide technical insight for our existing technologies and develop new technologies to capture and lead new programs with our military, government, and commercial customers.
Assemble small optical, electrical, mechanical assemblies
Operate standard electrical and optical laboratory test equipment such as light sources, power supplies and optical spectrum analyzers
Operate custom benchtop automated machinery for fastening and adhering small assemblies
Provide input and conduct tests plans consistent with product requirements
Inspect, troubleshoot and carryout engineering experiments to resolve development challenges
Perform calibration, burn-in and alignment checks on equipment and tools
Work with engineering to evaluate and implement process improvements
Work from verbal or written instructions
Maintain high standard of quality and apply skills consistent with operating procedures and standards
Essential Functions:
Build, align and qualify precision opto-mechanical assemblies and systems
Disassemble and re-assemble, align and qualify subassemblies and systems down to piece-part level
Inspect optical components for damage
Clean UV optical components, such as mirrors, beam splitters, polarizers, wave plates, and lenses
De-bond and re-mount optical components in lens cells
Conduct calibration and burn-in tests on optical systems
Prepare and follow engineering work order flow tags and prepare acceptance testing procedures
Work with quality control to validate hardware components and assemblies
Maintains equipment and tool calibration
Works with engineering to evaluate and implement process improvements
Ensures proper operation of equipment by performing scheduled preventative maintenance.
Etching fiber very percicely for integration into photonic systems
Manage lab that contains hazardous material
Works under limited supervision
May be a resource to other employees in areas of product expertise
Work may be structured within identified boundaries and procedures
Has the ability to follow established processes to complete tasks
Identifies problems and issues in straightforward situations and resolves most issues
Qualifications:
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience or 2 years post-Secondary/Associates Degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience.
3 years experience with assembly, dissasembly, and test of mechanical, electro-mechanical, or optical equipment
Previous or current experience operating precision hand tools such as micrometers and calipers is required
Ability to obtain a TS/SCI Security Clearance is required
Preferred Additional Skills:
Understanding of basic shop math such as ratios, graphs, algebra, and basic geometry
Experience with Microsoft Office and computer proficient
Class 3 soldering skills on small complex circuit boards is desireable
experience working with free space optics and fiber optics in laboratory settings is desireable
