The City of Norfolk’s Department of Human Services (NDHS) provides a wide range of essential services to its citizens. These services are crucial in supporting the wellbeing of the community and ensuring that all citizens have access to the resources they need. The NDHS is seeking to hire a Maintenance Mechanic I within their Administrative and Operations office to support with troubleshooting and resolving facility maintenance issues.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $40,960- $47,104
Essential Functions
Troubleshooting facility issues to include plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.
Performing interior and exterior building paint maintenance by performing paint preparations and renovating doors, windows, ceilings, walls, floors, patching holes, preparing wallboard for painting, and minor carpentry and repairs
Setting up extension ladders, folds ladders and scaffolds to ensure a safe work place
Painting, plastering, and constructing temporary walls and office spaces
Repairing and replacing ceiling tiles
Inspecting fire extinguishers and conduct fire alarm inspections
Conducting regular inspections of the facility generator
Performing removal of ice, snow, and storm debris
Overseeing and assist with clean-up after major and minor floods;
Changing electrical lamps and bulbs
Monitoring the operation of HVAC systems.
Performing general maintenance functions such as locating and repairing housekeeping equipment, repairing and replacing door locks and performing plumbing repairs
Loading, unloading, lifting, and carrying heavy construction materials, equipment and tools
Overseeing and assisting with moving of office furniture, equipment and providing office/meeting room set-up
Responding to fire and burglar alarms after-hours;
Cleaning trash/debris in parking lots/exterior
Driving various city vehicles to pick up and deliver a variety of supplies

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Work requires the ability to read work orders, safety data sheets and instruction manuals.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Work requires the ability to write general correspondence and fill out work orders and other forms.
Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees
Contacts others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City which may be involved in decision making or providing approval or decision-making authority for purchases or projects. Works with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Working with various state and federal agencies may also be required. Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, supplies or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, and sales representatives.

Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
One year of experience as a building helper or apprentice.
Additional Information & Requirements
Valid Drivers License.
May require a Forklift Operators License within six months of appointment.
Preferred:
Five years of experience as a building helper, maintenance worker or custodian.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus
Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
