Primary Care Technician

### Position Summary

Provide patient care for ill and injured animals in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This position will primarily be working in the Small Animal Clinic, with a predominant amount of time in the Primary Care unit; instructs and demonstrates techniques to students; assists students, veterinary technicians and veterinarians in their work; maintains supplies, equipment and cleanliness of hospital areas.

### Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.

### Desired Qualifications

Six months to one year as a veterinary technician in an educational setting, experience in a teaching hospital.

### Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting and carrying animals up to 50 pounds individually, or 150 pounds as a team.

### Summary of Health Risks

TB risk or potential exposure to animal or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis.

Work with animals or unfixed animal tissue.

Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort).
