Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
We announce one full time postdoctoral position (2 years, conditional with renewal) at the ISU Kent Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex in the area of feed technology under the direction of Dr. Dirk E. Maier in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University.
This position seeks an individual to lead innovative research in feed technology related to the application of physical, chemical, biochemical, biological and engineering techniques to increase the nutrient utilization of feeds; value-added processing of ingredients as an integral part of animal production systems to manufacture high quality, nutritious and bio-secure animal feeds; real-time assessment of the structures and functional properties of feed components to improve nutrient utilization for precision animal management systems; and utilization of artificial intelligence and measurement technology to improve operational efficiency and sustainability. The position includes responsibility for operationalizing and managing the pilot plant which manufactures small batch research diets for ISU researchers and external customers for fee-for-service, and which supports teaching Feed Technology Minor classes and continuing education courses of the International Grain & Feed Industry Academy at ISU.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering or Agricultural Systems Technology, Biosystems or Biological Engineering, Food Technology, Grain Science, or closely related engineering or technology discipline completed by the start of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated hands-on experience with operating grain processing and/or feed manufacturing equipment, agro-industrial facility operations management, and/or ingredient and end product quality analysis and measurement technologies.
• Experience conducting research with feed manufacturing equipment
• Experience collecting samples and analyzing for physical and nutritional properties
• Experience instrumenting processing equipment for real-time data collection
• Experience analyzing data with statistical tools
• Excellent oral and written communication skills

T he ISU Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex is a $25 million state-of-the-art grain handling, drying, storage and feed processing facility. Its mission furthers ISU’s teaching, research, service, extension, and industry and international outreach in support of the global grain and feed industry.
