Scrap Yard Worker/Equipment Operator

Responsibilities Include: You will have a variety of duties that make this position an important part of the operations. You will assist in several aspects of daily operational needs such as scrap inspection, ferrous and non-ferrous purchasing, mobile equipment operation, and performing general maintenance duties. You will be expected to safely operate a material handling crane or loader in order to accomplish daily tasks. You will communicate regularly with the scale, supervisor, other coworkers, and customers about the quality of material and shipping requirements.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
– Must have experience with sorting and grading of ferrous/non-ferrous materials.
– Operate all heavy equipment such as: small forklifts, excavators, skid steers, front-end loaders, and other related equipment.
– Operate equipment in the right direction and angles to prevent accidents and damage to
property.
– Ensure and manage the machines or equipment in a safe and secure way.
– Perform periodical safety, maintenance or servicing checks to ensure proper functioning of the equipment.
– Perform minor repair work during functioning problems.
– Inform and advise the management or repairmen for major repairs or maintenance.
– Drive and control the equipment.
– Respond to signals and direction by the staff and work in coordination with them.
– Operate cutting equipment, and a variety of hand tools.
– Operate Oxygen/Propane/Plasma Cutting Torch.
– Work in adherence to safe practices, procedures, work site or traffic laws.
– Report to the operation manager.
– Perform other duties, as and when assigned.
– Ensure that all incoming scrap is scanned for radiation and that all material that fails the scan is quarantined and the appropriate personnel are notified.
– Operate the loader and/or the material handler to assist in loading and unloading scrap
material, while following the quality standards of Gerdau and the customer.
– Ensure that all incoming scrap inspected against quality, and environmental standards and appropriate deductions and downgrades are applied. Communicate findings with the scale in a timely manner.
– Ensure that all outbound materials meet safety and quality standards.
– Detect and report faulty material, environmental hazards, safety, and/or improper operation of plant equipment or machinery; refer questionable and unusual matters to proper supervision. Maintain work area and equipment in a clear and orderly fashion.
– Provide excellent customer service.
– Assist maintenance personnel in the performance of equipment repairs as required or directed.
– Operate the Baler Operation.
– Assist in nonferrous processing, including segregation of materials to upgrade products. For example: Copper, Brass, Aluminum, etc.
– Assist co-workers in daily operational duties that are essential to the yard in terms of safety, efficiency, and profitability.
Qualification requirements:
– A High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
– 1-2 years of experience preferred.
– Ability to communicate and interact both verbally and written.
– A keen eye for detail and good decision-making skills.
– Manage to handle emergency situations, work pressure and stress.
– Ability to complete work projects on time and in an effective manner.
– Possess a deep analytic understanding and problem-solving skills. Devoted to following the code of ethics.
– Can work independently with a minimum of supervision.
– Good relationship building ability.
– Flexible to work during odd hours.
– Basic reading skills and must be able to follow directions.
– Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
– High attention to detail and self-motivation skills.
– Work in a team environment and respect all teammates.
Physical demands and responsibilities:
– Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
– Sit or st nd for extended periods of time, bend at waist, twist upper body, walk, and/or otherwise move around uneven surfaces and on railroad ballast. Climb up and down on equipment.
Job Conditions:
– This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt are present due to the equipment, machinery, and scrap as would be found throughout the scrap yard. Safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, and face shields must be worn to eliminate the risks associated with these hazards.
