This position supports the Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services by
verifying billing information before it is sent to the billing vendor.
The EMS Billing specialist team reviews electronic patient care reports
for completeness and accuracy, and ensures any additional information
and signatures are included in the files. This position works
extensively with information protected under HIPAA. Moreover, the
position is exposed to highly sensitive and potentially disturbing
information related to emergency medicine and patient information, and
requires a high level of discretion.
EMS Billing Compliance
– Review electronic patient care reports (EPCR) for accuracy and
completeness before release to the billing vendor
– Use internal and external systems to verify patient demographic
information, mileage, and payer information
– Search for payment sources and call types in the ticketing system to
identify tickets that need to be worked more urgently or with
different procedures
– Verify all additional information is correct and complete for calls
with Medicare, Medicaid, or TRICARE payers
– Flag self-pay tickets for additional information
– Ensure ticket information is complete, well-ordered, and
consolidated to speed up the processing time of the billing vendor
Interaction with Internal and External Partners
– On tickets involving external agencies, communicate with agencies to
understand and document any concerns or gaps in information
– Answer questions for crews as needed by phone or in-person
– Follow up with crews to clarify potential issues in reports, and
update information as needed to maintain compliance with all laws,
regulations, and policies
Administrative Duties
– Back up the Administrative Assistant as needed including mail and
assisting customers
– Act as backup for Release of HIPAA-related information requests, and
document each release into tracking spreadsheets
– Secondary Job Functions (list no more than 5)
– Comply with all mandatory training requirements of Sedgwick County
– Work hold-list items to follow up on any outstanding issues
– Assist in obtaining documentation to be used in providing education
with regard to areas where improvement is needed
– Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year
of experience or education in medical administration, billing, or
related fields. One year of experience with Microsoft Suite or similar
systems.
Preferred Qualifications: Formal coursework in HealthCare billing.
Formal coursework in Microsoft Suite or other applicable computer
systems. Two (2) years of experience in healthcare billing or insurance.
